I entered Thailand on a multiple entry OA retirement visa which expires on 14th December. I wish to apply for extension of this visa and believe I have two options:

1) Extend whilst in Thailand or

2) Leave before my visa expires and do the extension overseas.

If I extend in Thailand, I have the bank requirements and a letter from my GF who owns the house we like in stating I can stay there. Is there a web link, or official site I can refer to that will guide me through the requirements and paperwork?

I had read quite some time ago of option 2 above and if I remember correctly it was stated that this was the simpler option but I have no idea as of now.

Grateful for any advice!  I wish to do one year extension and ensure the extension will also be multip[le entry as per original visa.

Here is a prior Trip report from @TallGuyJohninBKK and one from myself.  Should help you.

As far as option 2 you listed, you can not extend a visa such as an extension of stay like you do here in the country.

Having an ME OA visa you can exit and then re-enter to get a 2nd year, but if your returning after the 1st year on the 2 year ME OA Visa you will need to pick-up a re-entry permit either at CW or at the Airport if you plan on returning before December 17th and that will give you the 2nd year.  If your in Phuket then Phuket immigration should be able to do the re-entry permit.

If after December 17th then you will need to re-apply for a new Non Imm OA visa, or you can do a 30 day Visa exemption if you come from one of the countries that are allowed on your arrival should it be after the 17th.  During that 30 day period you can obtain a Non Imm O at CW or immigration.

Either way you can do your extension of stay now, and obtain the re-entry permit and when you return you'll be good to go until the Extension of stay date.

1. You would apply for a extension of stay for the one year permit to stay you got from your OA visa the last time you entered on your visa.

If your OA visa expiring or your permit to stay it allowed the last time you used it to enter the country?

2. If your OA visa has not expired yet you could leave and re-enter the country to get a new one year permit to stay on or before December 14th.

To get the new one year permit to stay from your visa you would need one year of health insurance to get full year. You can use proof of insurance from a non Thai insurance company.

Number 1 would also require the health insurance to get a one year extension of stay from one of the companies listed here for the OA visa. https://longstay.tgia.org/

And 800k baht in a Thai bank for 2 months on the day you apply. You will need a letter from the bank confirming your account and copies of your updated bank book showing the 800k baht has been in the bank for 2 months.

The rest is copies of your passport photo page, visa, entry stamp and TM6 denture card. The rest of the the requirements can depend upon the office where you apply for the extension of stay.

Option 2. Won't work. You cannot exit Thailand and obtain an extension outside of Thailand.

Your thinking of exit and reenter Thailand prior to it's expiry. You would be stamped in for another 12 months.

This is what was so attractive about O-A. Effectively 2 year.

With borders closed currently not good option.

Yes you can obtain 12 month extension as you suggest. Requirements covered in first post by Ryan.

Note you will need to purchase a multiple reentry permit since you mentioned you require multi entry.

A multiple reentry permit cost 3800baht. Can obtain at immigration or at airport on departure.

Strikes me that, in this particular situation, the OP would, in practice, need to obtain the re-entry permit in advance from his immigration office since he would have to provide a copy as part of an application for a Thailand Pass which he would almost certainly require in order to be able to re-enter Thailand (and which IMHO he would be best advised to get sorted before flying out).

EDIT: But that said, he would, of course, be unable to obtain a re-entry permit which anticipated the permission of stay which he would be granted upon his eventual return to Thailand! So if he is in the second year of an OA visa maybe his best course of action would be to exit Thailand without a re-entry permit and start afresh with a new non-O visa (if this were possible in his case) so as to exempt himself from the health insurance requirement.

He was writing about getting the re-entry permit on departure from the country at the Suvarnabhumi airport. There is desk to get them there just before departure immigration.
