I knew a few Albanians in The Bronx. They were in fact indentured servants to rich very Catholic families, and were ga-ga crazy about loving America. Super exclusionary culture, more so even than Koreans or Ethiopeans.

Later she was raped  and killed.  Women in Mexico  and some other countries say India are held in low regard and considered fair game for rape /murder. I would not move to any country like that. Your choice if you want to move to a place like that. The low cost of living would not outway the dangers.

The cost of living is not that low in Mexico relative to Colombia and Ecuador. You are welcome to avoid countries for whatever reasons that you have  Personally I feel living in Mexico where I would live in Mexico would be much safer than where I would be able to live in the USA. There are roughly 1.5 MILLION Americans living in Mexico. Mostly they're not being murdered

Yes in general cost of living is lower in Mexico than the U.S  but I was talking about Mexico compared to other typical budget expat options.  In which case Mexico is definitely not the cheapest. Of course as anywhere it matters exactly where in any country. San Cristobal de las Casas would be quite cheap relative to Puerto Vallarta or a high end neighborhood in Monterrey. Picking expat destinations is not a one size fits all situation.

I mean, some of these places it's near impossible to get a retirement visa or live there full time permanently.  Australia is really difficult to get a visa to live, and Portugal you can not say more then 6 months full time per year.

Portugal has an excellent and very affordable retirement visa program. Also open to non retirees and an easy path to permanent residence.

Not so easy as Thailand.  You have to have quite a lot of money and also buy property that meets certain criteria.

 

You also have to live there full time a set period of years full time....  it is possible, but not as easy to live permanently and retire as Thailand....and certainly much more expensive.

Sure. Mexico has many states. But such lists are limited. For one example, there is no problem traveling or living in Mazatlan which happens to be in Sinaloa.

 

Mexico remains incredibly popular with American and Canadian expats to the point where its extremely difficult to book appointments at many Mexican consulates for residency applications and similarly difficult at Mexican immigration offices in more popular places in Mexico such as Queretaro. You must apply in Mexico within 30 days after entering with a new residency visa or the vida vanishes.
