I would prefer a glass of vino over a pint anytime, so where is the best wine list without having to hang out in a resort?

Some apps, tapas or cheeses to go with it would also be nice.

Am I correct in assuming the wines are mostly Aussie and French?

How are the costs of wines when compared to the rest of the world?

Cheers...

I would like to hear more about wine availability in phuket as well.

Most restaurants in patong sell the virtualy undrinkable thai wine or a watered down italian swill.

The house wine at the Islander restaurant is the only really pleasantly drinkable wine I've found in a restaurant for a reasonable price. The food is good there too.

I havent been in it yet but I saw a little wine shop next to a german restaurant. It is in a newish development a block up the street from Cristins massage behind the Corsican restaurant and a new pizza place there in patong.

:D

Your home would be the best place and you could buy your needs at the Deli Market, on the 2nd rd..Patong.. :D

Nice cheese, bread, French sticks etc. Lots of Wines. :D

Then, no need to hang around the resorts….. ehhhh…. Pang Maakkkk…(Expensive) :o

Tapas ??? mmm, Kan not help you on that one, (Mai Loo :D ). Maybe make your own ? me think !!!

Does the lack of response to this question indicate a business opportunity?

Are you asking about wine lists available in restaurants? or what is sold in Phuket?

There is every wine imaginable in Phuket!, Lotus, Pomphan, Big C, Dons, Patong Deli etc etc - lots of Aussie, French, Californian, Italian etc etc.

Prices are a little more expensive, but not too much.

Well as I understand it wine commands a 350% import duty (farangs drink wine, thais as a rule dont) hence the reason we tend to get swill..

You can get good wine here just expect to pay shocking prices..

The Green Man has about the biggest and best wine list I've seen on the Island. Some are crazy prices, but others very reasonable. Same same...you get what you pay for. Howard would give you a tour of his wine cellar if you asked him, I'm sure. He loves to talk wine, and drink it .

Food's very good too .

They have a monthly wine tasting evening there too, with yummy cheese :o

:D:D Enjoy

I can never remember the blo**dy name of it, but there's a very well priced wine in Lotus liquor shop (Terra d'azini, terra d'azur?) It has a dark blue label with a sun on it. There's a white and a red (Sauv Blanc and Cab Sauv) and they're only 333 baht a bottle. Anyone else know it?

In my views its one of the best wine buys in Thailand, and I generally pick up 6 bottles at a time for 2,000 baht.

Pick up some cheeses, sausages, crackers, and an assorted pack of the fresh sushi platters you get in Lotus deli, and there's your pre-dinner/sundown wine and snacks for the evening.

Lotus often has "Buy 2, get 1 free" promotion on wines too.

I know its a pain for the touristas who arrive in Patong 60 minutes after they clear their flight, and never leave the strip until they go home again (thinly veiled swipe at folks who believe Patong is Phuket) :o

- but a simple piece of advice is to stop off at Lotus or Big-C on the way from the airport to Patong and stock up for the week.

This way, you're not paying stupid prices for soft drinks, iced teas, snacks, and booze - you just empty your hotel's mini-bar upon check-in, and fill it with your own gourmet deli.

Anyway - as Tornado says there's plenty of wine available. Take a walk around, and check out interesting looking restaurants during the day, and inspect their wine choices/prices. This way, you're not stuck in the evening.

What about the La Salsa bar, at the Impiana Cabana?

diogenes, if you do find the holy grail - ie a nice little bar/lounge/cafe that has a reasonably priced wine list, with the appropriate types of foods to go with them, please post back and let us know. Good thread.

SVB, the wine you speak off is a great buy and I use it in my spaghetti sauce. I just looked in the pantry but seem to be out of it - so unsure of the name as well. I buy all my wine at Pomphan on Chaofa West Road, the prices are usually better than Lotus and it is also a family business, which I like to support.

Does anyone frequent bar XVI in Phuket Town. What a great little wine/cocktail bar that is. Nice wine, nice ambiance. Very chic !! :D

Also Seua Saming (not right spelling), but nice club with wine, no girld etc. (all in navy blue, if you know where I mean)

Will someone with a bit of cash (sorry, I'm a poor teacher) please open one in or near Patong. It needs something more classy :o

If you really are a "poor teacher" how do you afford to drink wine,

the prices in Thailand are outrageous, due the excessive duty.
