Daily News reported that Hua Mark police and officers from Thang Duan 2 attended the scene of an accident on the Srirat expressway in the area of the bridge over Klong Saen Saeb at 12.55 this morning.

Inside a blue Honda stopped on the left with its rear smashed in were three dead people. In the back was a lady called Atchara, 30, and in the front passenger seat was Somsak, 44.

The dead female driver was unidentified.

Bits of the vehicles involved were spread all over the expressway.

About ten meters away was a white Mercedes Benz with red plates (brand new) with its front smashed in.

(Night time lighting made it appear that the car was yellow, notes ASEAN NOW).

Behind the wheel was a man called Jinthawat or "Boat", 33, a leading executive with a famous comestics brand.

Witnesses said that the Benz had been driven at high speed and joined the Srirat expressway section heading to the Chonburi motorway from the Chalongrat section. It collided with the rear of the Honda.

Expressway police took the driver away for an alcohol test.

Daily News further reported that relatives of the dead arrived in tears at the scene with at least one person fainting.

Hua Mark police are in charge of the investigation.

From the amount of rear-end damage, it does look like the Honda was stationary.

On the expressway?

Side-effects from an earlier visit to the dentist? Brake failure?

Doncha just love the level of detailed reporting?

Some thai press reports indicate he was racing another vehicle (not the Honda Brio).

Red plate drivers Zero Alcohol.

Drivers with red plates must seek permission from authorities if they want to use the vehicle at night.

Not allowed on expressway's either according to an article I just read on a website that cannot be named here.

Means nothing..  Here in the moo baan we live is a porsche with red plates that must be 9 months old.  Another way of Thais telling everyone I am better than you.

There was a news item on the local telly this morning that showed dashcam from another car following, people exiting from police offices and waiiing everyone in the vicinity, some distraught and upset people wailing and preparations for a funeral.

I need to talk to Udon Home Cable as my service is rubbish and the sound and vision made everything very hard to follow.

Here's the dashcam clip. The Honda was parked apparently, possibly just over the brow of a slight incline?

Under the law, drivers who use cars with red plates have to seek permission from authorities if they want to use the vehicle at night. Cars with red plates cannot be driven out of the province or zone where the vehicle was temporarily registered to obtain the red plates. In the event they do, drivers must ask for permission each time they want to travel outside the specified area. Documents must be properly filled out, with the destination and the dates of travel.

These cars are not allowed to use the expressways. Drivers of cars with red plates must be sure they have all car-related documents, a proper driving licence and ID cards, ready for checks at all times.  ????

YMMV = Your mileage may vary.

TiT = This is Thailand.

It means that what one person reports as their factual and/or witnessed experience does not mean that the experience of others in the same circumstances will be identical.

In this instance, many people, including myself have driven on expressways with at night with red plates without happenstance while some people, including myself on a separate occasion, were hassled for money because I was driving on the expressway at night with red plates.

In the UK there is a specific offence of "causing death by reckless driving". Very serious - between murder and manslaughter. Anything in Thai law like that?

If you are rich enough here, you are a law unto yourself. How many rich people, and people in positions of power get locked up? Prison is for the commoners.
