Government to Form National Shipping Line Promoting Thailand as Regional Trade Hub

BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has announced its intention to establish a state shipping line company to promote Thailand as a marine logistics hub.

 

According to Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered state agencies to explore options for launching the shipping company in line with the Southern Land Bridge project.

 

The aim of the land bridge is to allow cargo transport between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.

 

A working panel, led by Deputy Transport Minister Atirat Ratanasate, is currently in talks with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) to conduct a feasibility study on setting up the national shipping line.

 

The deal is expected to be finalized in January 2022, with the study to conclude in May before being presented to the Cabinet in September, followed by the company’s launch within a year.

 

Concerning efforts to promote international shipping, the working panel has instructed both the Marine Department and the PAT to look into offering privileges encouraging more operators to fly Thai flags.

 

The spokesperson said the prime minister intends to enhance the nation’s competitiveness and reduce its reliance on foreign-owned ships while lowering transport costs and supporting efforts to establish a national fleet of commercial vessels.

 

Through these efforts and the development of skills for commercial shipping personnel, the government hopes to transform Thailand into a logistics hub for regional maritime trade.

This will go as well as Thai Airways.  At least they could use their submarines as cargo vessels.

Start up a shipping line ....just like that .......when there are so many

more basic things that need putting right first , basic like the electric

does not go down when the wind blows and it rains, increase the water

supply, I can <deleted> harder than its coming out of the pipes in our Moo Bahn,

train the workforce so they have better skills , do the simple stuff first ,

forget about sending probes to the moon, submarines, and shipping lines .

Which/what is  you want? A stable but cheap infrastructure of advantage to expat origins that includes the right to complain despite the fact that that infrastructure is provided to a majority who pay 7% VAT on otherwise untaxed income and expenditure?

Perhaps it will surprise you but Thailand is an export country.  The yearly volume is some $200 billion,  that cannot be shipped per internet but has to be loaded on ships, some also onto airplanes.

 

Currently, there is a global problem with free volume of oversee vessels sailing out of Asia, part of it also from Thailand, waiting list 1 - 2 months.  And that despite of the high prices, about 4 -5 times higher than 2 - 3 years ago.

 

What is shipped from Thailand is loaded on small feeder ships sailing to Singapore where the containers are reloaded on large vessels sailing to US West and East Coast, also to Europe. That reloading is with quite a substantial delay, currently even much more increased delay since the volume of the ships coming from China is not always available for the Thai containers. 

 

And there are only few shipping lines with smaller sea vessels sailing out of Bkk ports directly to US East Coast and to Europe via Suez.  Considering these facts, there surely could be a niche for some new shipping lines that would bypass Singapore. 

 

So, if you would get informed yourself about the current shipping situation - not only in Thailand - you could hardly ask such a silly question as you did above, could you?

You don't have to teach me about this subject, I've been working all my life on ships and in shipping but to me it seems you are taking things to serious.

Trade from Thailand is not only containers, it also consist of bulk for instance tapioca is shipped in bulkers of 100 - 150,00 tons.

Thailand use to have their own shipping line shipping this cargo we even repaired some of them. The fleet was old and rusty and not maintained properly that's why they disappeared because in nearly every West European port the vessels were arrested by the authorithies due to technical defects.

Besides you need a marine history and background which doesn't exist in Thailand, showing off in a fancy uniform with a lot of gold on it is not enough to keep a fleet going.

That explains my question because insurance premium for cargo shipped on Thai ships will be pretty high.

I contacted three Thai shipping companies for a small load to Spain.  There were two non-replies and the 3rd wanted to know what the other two had quoted!

this is the fundamental principle of the financial industry, they dont create anything either, as the money flows through their channels, they take a slice no matter the direction, or profitability of the transaction for the user.

The cargo insurance presents an insignificant amount (in Baht) to the freight cost (e.g. $15,000 - 20,000 for a container to US).
