People living in Bangkok and 14 other provinces have been advised to refrain from outdoor activities, such as exercise, from today (Thursday) until Monday, due to worsening air pollution caused by the accumulation of PM2.5 dust in the air.

According to Pollution Control Department chief Atthapol Charoenchansa, the amount of PM2.5 exceeds the 50-micron standard level and is likely to peak this Saturday through Monday, when situation is expected to improve due to the arrival of north-easterly wind.

The levels of PM2.5 dust in the capital and surrounding provinces today range from 54 to 102 microns, with Paknam sub-district in Samut Prakan logging 103 microns, which is considered to be hazardous to health.

Improve for a week or what?

In the last years it was bad for months!

Better get an air purifier now if you don't have one already.

Year in and year out, this continues and gets worse. Nothing is ever done. The Minister of Public Health and the joke that is Thailand's PM form yet another committee to look at the problem and on it goes. Kids sit in schools with open windows and millions need to exist in this air to work and eat. Meanwhile the people who could address this drive in air conditioned limos to their air conditioned offices and really don't care. I wonder if Anutin and Prayut or the man who we can't mention have ever lost a second's sleep over this public health disaster. I think we know the answer.

Burning season... that’s it....

Hua Hin was engulfed a few days ago....  We passed some fields which were alight.

The issue is a multifaceted cultural one....

- Farmers burn (alternatives are more costly).

- Farmers know burning is illegal and know the Police do nothing.

- Police are lazy and do nothing because those in positions of power are tolerant of their apathy.

The ‘seasonal’ announcements are simply theatre, along with the helmet crack-downs and all other crack downs,... nothing is done expect continuing to enable the police to profit from soft targets selling booze.

You mean the country who enforces no meaningful emission standards and allows any person to burn unlimited amounts of trash has a pollution problem? I'm shocked.

The next announcement due in the next couple of weeks is the ‘sloppy shoulders’ one….. “the pollution is not from Thailand but from neighboring countries”….  (Usually in early Jan !).

There will also be an announced crackdown on roads deaths following the usual NYE spike due to DUI.

The juvenile mindset of those in positions of power are nothing if not anything other than predictable!!!

Yeah right. Wait until about 4 PM and within 4 minutes I'll find you 4 people burning a large pile of leaves.

yesterday I heard a new explanation to add to your list. The police can't do anything because it will reflect poorly on the elected official who is above them and they won't get re-elected.

That's right, Thailand has poisoned air because some idiot burning is so offended that he can't burn he won't vote for the person enforcing the laws.

Don’t let this out to potential high value tourists.  They could hesitate to make bookings.  On the other hand, if word got out internationally—perhaps something of substance would be accomplished.

And a very Merry Christmas to you all, from all the wonderful people doing just as little as they can to stop burning and massive levels of deadly air pollutants.

No,no, no its all a misunderstanding.  The govt has it all under control, they said so last month, and last year and year before and every year for the more than 20 Ive been here.  You just have to be patient ..........or suffocate.

That didn’t take long.....  Those in positions of decision making power in Thailand are nothing if not utterly predictable !!! ????
