When I first arrived in Saudi it was just before the Blue Diamond affair and all of the domestic staff were Thais. They provided a very good service and we got on with them very well.

It was 1984 when I first went there... and as I stated only 1 or two employed on the Engineering side where I worked. I did not have much interaction with domestics. I do recall seeing a lot of 'maids' arriving at the airport, who were all fearful looking Indonesians. I suspected a preference for Muslims.

Yes, I recall that there was a special waiting area for them at Riyadh arrivals. They were not allowed to leave the airport without being personally escorted by their sponsor. There had been quite a number who had 'disappeared' shortly after arrival, so the girls were right to look somewhat fearful. It's an intimidating country for unattached females.

selling them for the good of the country tho. they will die here, no more gov't welfare funds, no more tourism, no more real estate development. no more options. it's a 3rd world country with lagging education and no prospects. at least it will be fewer mouths to feed back home. Prayut's worked himself into a corner, and this is the only way out. as he found out, leading a country isn't as easy as whatever generals in Thailand do all day. he should have left it to the pros, but that's what you get with a junta coup - indentured servitude

Great points. Thanks. He has backed Thailand into a terrible position. It could be a decade before the economy is back on track, and the glory days of rapid growth, and huge tourism numbers are gone for good. Thailand is moving backwards, under the stewardship of the mindless dinosaurs. The youth must figure out a way to wrestle control from the goons, otherwise Thailand is finished. Expect Thailand to fall by 50 positions in world GDP (into the 80th position) in the next 10-20 years, if nothing changes here, in terms of "leadership".

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha instructed related agencies to find Thai workers

More a cover story. The Saudis wanted something back and would only accept it, from the head of Thailand;  Prime Minister General Prayut, in person.

Today Saudi has its pick of low-end foreign workers. More, they have had budget problems recently and have been cutting back. Some will be hired but no where near the numbers of the late 80’s.
After the theft
After the murders
After the biggest Gem Scam in Thailand’s history.
After acquitting the police gang, and giving a promotion to Major Gen Somkid Boonthanom.

The only option for restoration of relations, Saudi tourism, was an in person visit. Give they guy credit. He was able to get some of the baubles back, then suck it up, bring them in person, with apologies. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Remittance  money sent to Thailand by Thais working  in Saudi used to be an important  part of the Thai  economy. It stopped around 1989 due to the 'Blue Diamond affair ' Its very good that Thais now have the chance to work in Saudi  again. Not just Saudi  but the whole of the MENA region, where due to informal sanctions and pressure from KSA other countries blocked Thais and replaced them with other TCNs. It's good news for Thais and Thailand but no credit needs to go to the PM.

They want 'Skilled' workers from Thailand; so there won't be a queue !

The Thai workforce is held in high esteem throughout  the world. You wouldn't know that but instead choose to use this news for the same tired, unoriginal Thai bashing. You know little of Thailand and less of Saudi.

I know many skilled and talented Thai, from arts and science .

I am afraid for unskilled replacement Thais for Fillipinos who seem to be there in ever decreasing numbers due to many many factors. Known to be exploited in construction and domestic services

Yes you have a point but most get out when their annual contract is over or choose to stay if the conditions are OK

The way immigrant labour was treated was well known among the expats, but of course there was sod all we could do about it, and we were there for the money.

One enterprising Thai found a way to deal with it ????. Probably should get a humanitarian award for their efforts, given the ban that followed. I believe the prince who was robbed, has since had allegations of abusive behaviour to staff.

And have you ever heard of visas and sponsors? Thais do not and cannot just hop on a plane and hotfoot to the middle east whenever they fancy. And that would be especially true when the world was in a Covid lock down.

I don't know if it was legal, and not sure if it was specifically Dubai, but I also know a girl who went to the middle east (possibly Bahrain, I forget) during COVID. She tested positive for covid while over there, which made her reconsider her plan. There is no reason she would make this up, and given other posters reporting similar, it would seem they found a way (possibly through shady brokers).

Oh there is way of course. It's by sponsorship either for domestic work or for working in the hospitality industry. (that's where I meet my Thai wife by the way)

Each Emirati have a sponsorship quota for domestic servants and if they don't use them all, they will 'trade' them to agencies. So yes, I agree with you. It is possible.

Plenty of available Labour here.  Out on my daily Bike ride this morning i saw the usual Labour availabilty; some sitting on their haunches smoking weed, some drinking Beer at 8am and others swinging in Hammocks, all the things i've seen them doing for the last 15 years while their Wives and Girlfriends work from silly O'Clock in the morning until silly O'Clock in the evening at the Local Market or on the Street to feed the Family and the Men's bad habits.   These 'Men' and millions of others like them all over the Country have no 'skills' other than those already mentioned.   I would suggest rounding a few thousand of them up and sending them to anywhere they may be of some use....wherever that may possibly be !

Yea they got some pretty bad things going on over there and in Qatar.

Seems odd he would promote sending his own people.

Prayutkhun is one of the best things for Thailand no doubt but I disagree with him on this one.

If he is so good for Thailand why is he hated for the misery,  corruption  and poverty  he has brought  to the country

Try getting up at planting time or harvest  time in the middle of the night when the guys are preparing to go out  to work  the land. There is more to their life than what a white man sees as he passes through  their life

Considering what the average monthly salary for Thai laborer's is in Thailand, These Thais that go over to Saudi to work will be making a lot more then what they can make in Thailand.

Making more money and saving more money as contracts include flights, clothes, food, housing,  medical etc.

My wife's uncle earns enough money in Finland in 3 months of berry picking that he doesn't have to work the other 9 months after coming home.

Thai berry-pickers from Sweden and Finland have returned home after striking the jackpot during the prime picking season. The Thai labourers have reportedly earned almost 800 million baht in the last 3 months. Thailand’s Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin says the workers arrived back today and were happily not empty-handed.

“Today, 895 Thai labourers returned home via Suvarnabhumi Airport, 365 of them from Finland and 530 from Sweden. They had been working there since July during the berry-picking season. Since October 1, 3,270 Thai labourers have returned from these countries (689 from Finland and 2,581 from Sweden) where they got paid around 80,000 baht per month, or total earnings of almost 800 million baht.”

Suchart says sending such labourers overseas is one of the ministry’s missions after PM Prayut set out to promote the skills of Thais in international markets to assure the world of Thailand’s Covid-19 prevention efficiency. That mission saw almost 5,300 Thais landing in Sweden and Finland for work. After the berry-picking season ended, Thai labourers are trickling back into the country until October 23.
