Tough Covid measures likely for Valentine’s Day and Songkran

Covid-19 preventive measures are likely to be increased for Valentine’s Day next week and Songkran in April as daily infections have exceeded 10,000 for several days now.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration’s (CCSA) Operation Centre on Thursday is considering proposing tougher preventive measures for Valentine’s Day and Songkran, according to a Government House source.

The OWD data is a day behind for now, and doesn't reflect today's Thailand update to 14,822 new official cases. But it does give a good look at the way official COVID case counts have been trending since the start of 2022:

But not much trend movement on reported COVID deaths thus far, with another 20 new reported today not yet on the chart below:

Thailand did extremely well to " control " the rise of Omicron during their High Season for Tourists.

Now the high season has all but finished, the " control " seems to have slipped and we are seeing some relatively large increases in the Infection numbers. However, the rate of  increases are still very small compared to what other Nations around the Globe have reported

It was interesting to note that of 434 Infections on Phuket, there were 192 Foreigners among them, which is close to 50 % of the cases

This seems very high compared in relation to the population of Phuket at around 300,000

Another, perhaps more significant trend indicator than just cases since the start of the new year:

Thailand COVID hospitalization (real ones, not "hospitels" and such) -- tripled:

Jan. 4 -- 17,280

Feb. 1 -- 40,590

Feb 10 -- 51,435

Thailand COVID patients in serious/critical condition -- almost unchanged:

Jan. 4 -- 555

Feb. 1 -- 557

Feb 10 -- 563

Sources from MoPH:

(the largest white font number in each chart is the total number of COVID cases under any treatment as of that date. The top right hand corner number in each graphic is the actual real COVID hospitalizations.)  The bottom right hand corner blue font number in each chart is COVID patients requiring intubation to breath.

First report since the 7th Feb when 101 cases were reported. Big increase now!

Health officials on Wednesday (Feb 10) reported 208 new COVID-19 cases, of which 29 cases were found in Hua Hin.

Elsewhere in the province, 41 cases were found in Pranburi, 3 cases in Sam Roi Yot, 56 cases in Kuiburi, 22 cases in Thap Sakae, 20 cases in Bang Saphan, 3 cases in Bang Saphan Noi, and 31 cases in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan.

No new deaths were reported today.

I don’t think Thailand has the testing capacity to see rapidly increasing cases as in other countries or even if it has, it has no inclination to utilize it. Agree, once peaked it should then follow other countries in decline.

If  numbers of hospitalizations and deaths directly due to covid were published in differentiation to totality of "detected"  infections it would be more genuinely indicative of  impact.

Near 15,000 new infection  and 8500 recoveries?  Recoveries from near death or what?

14822 new  cases.....Hospitalized , icu, aspirated?????

It  gets  boringly  continuously  superficially  irrelevant  to  the reality of stretched  tolerance !

Omicron is a game changer.  No point even counting cases and the way deaths are recorded needs to be reassessed. It stands to reason that patients in hospital for other compelling reasons, can't really be dying of Omicron if their respiratory symptoms are mild.  In the UK, it is thought that the over count is 40%.

Well, you made that last bit up.

The problem is that the bulk of the new hospitalizations came in the last 2 weeks, so some fraction of those patients will be going to ICU. And some will die.

No, Omicron is not endemic in Thailand.

Here's a hint: endemic diseases do not cause hospitalizations to triple in a month.

Here's a hint.

Take off your rose tinted glasses, turn on a TV and see what's happening in the developed world.

The real spread of covid in Thailand is as limited as the testing and reporting allow.

You keep your tin hat on, the rest of us are moving on.

Yep. Where hospitalizations from Omicron trend down, countries react accordingly.

Hospitalizations in Thailand are trending up.

Thailands testing numbers have plummeted recently.

Sweden has 80% of its population age 50 and above TRIPLE vaxed mostly with mRNA COVID vaccines.

Thailand only has 62% of its population age 60 and older DOUBLE vaxed, and a lot of those with one or more marginaly effective Sinovac shots.]  And only 20-some percent of its total population that have received third booster shots thus far.

The two countries aren't even remotely in the same situation COVID-risk wise.

As Bkk Brian has noted Thailand never really did mass testing anyway so not much point in counting, just treat the sick instead of counting those that are not sick.Time to move on.

As posted earlier in this thread, that's getting harder and harder to do in Thailand lately...

Thailand COVID hospitalization (real ones, not "hospitels" and such) -- tripled:

Jan. 4 -- 17,280

Feb. 1 -- 40,590

Feb 10 -- 51,435

Are these hospitalisations with covid or because of covid?

The UK's hospitalisations due to covid where relatively low with omicron.

Many patients where admitted for other reasons and just happened to test positive for covid in hospital.

Would be interesting to know.

It's possible, but it would not explain the increase. The number of heart attacks or other diseases has surely not tripled between Jan. 4 and Feb. 10.

It is very likely that this number remained more or less constant.

I don't believe Thailand details their COVID hospitalization data that way....

But, something is driving the tripling of hospitalized patients with COVID since the start of the year...

I would imagine, it's some combination of:

a: there are lots more people with COVID who are getting hospitalized for some reason

and/or

b: there are lots more people with COVID who are needing hospitalization because of COVID.

Either way, it suggests there are lots more people with COVID.

recoveries - 2 negative pcr tests over 24 hours. New cases - just testing positive on a pcr test. None say anuthing about severity. Just watch the number of deaths, seriousand ventilated cases that are published each day.

Just let tourists visit and still lock them up in quarantine when they test positive. You stop counting the infections then you have to stop testing the tourists as well or it really shows the true intentions of what they see the tourists as, a cash cow.
