Putin wants to recreate the Soviet Union.  That means capturing former USSR countries such as Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which are all NATO members.

The freedoms and liberties Europeans enjoy today were paid for by those killed in the fight against the Axis, it’s not a fight that worked out well for those killed but millions did return home and for them and their descendants it worked out very well.

I agree. I think this war will drag on and sanctions will remain on Russia and continue to ratchet up as long as Russia keeps targeting civilians and stays in either the Crimea or Donbas regions. Eventually, Russia will have to cry "uncle". Biden was right when he said Putin must go even though the white house walked back the regime changing aspect. It's inconceivable that the west will now accommodate an indicted war criminal going forward. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that he will be indicted by the ICC.

 

The western move away from reliance on Russian gas and oil is now a one way street regardless. In this respect, Putin has done his country a great disservice.

Still plenty of money from energy sales. If Putin clearly loses then he's toast. Strong man becomes weak loser so bye bye. But if he can hold on for a protracted war then he keeps his power.

What is not good is that something like 80% of Russians support Putin and they believe him even more that the west is evil also they can see his right by all the sanctions being implemented.

Putin has 100% control over news, media and education and backs it all up with a network of secret police and spies.

 

80% isn’t under those circumstances such a high number.

Putin is very very motivated to win or at least have a way to fake a win. He loses he's finished. Ukraine is an existential threat to Putin. A protracted war at least keeps him going. Putin as dictator will do almost anything or even anything to stay in power. He'll find the money.

Money from oil and gas is still being paid since the war,  Germany for one is heavily dependant on gas from Russia.

Reported on Al Jazeera today that Putin wants the gas and oil paid for in roubles or he turns off the taps. I'll make a wild guess and say that European countries that depend on Russian energy will pay up.

Also on Al Jazeera that Germany can't transition away from Russian energy as it doesn't have the infrastructure to do so and won't till 2024.

Seems they didn't consider how being dependent on Russia might not be a good idea.
