I attempted to purchase a phone from AIS's site and it seems I need a Thai ID in order to purchase it with a plan.

Is it possible to do this with my passport as an American?

It will save me about 5,000 baht and I plan on getting a contract with AIS anyway.

Is there a way to do this or a good alternative way of buying a phone online, or do I have to go to their store? Thanks.

You can get an ID number in a few minutes applying for an income tax card at your local tax office, or you will have one on the covid vax certificate
