This is mainly done by getting victims to pay tax on parcels or presents claimed to be held up at customs. Gang members pose as customs and other officialdom in the scam.

Lt-Gen Somprasong Yenthuam, Region 3 chief, said there had been complaints from over 100 women and there were thought to be many more reluctant to come forward.

Fraudster Sathaporn said she had no proper job and lived via fraud. She said she learnt the tricks of the Romance Scam while in the company of foreigners in Malaysia.

In this operation she claimed to be taking 10% of the profits.

Daily News reported that the police action was part of RTP chief Gen Suwat Chyaengyodsuk's plan to crack down on online fraud that is adding to the people's hardship from the pandemic.

Why do older women always look for young guys and old guys always look for young women? It's just a normal thing as our eyes never get old.

I think these women were tricked at the thought of extra wealth not servicing.

Pesky foreigners

Some Malaysians tried the 'blackjack scam' on me in Kuala Lumpur years ago. Reportedly, this scam originated in Thailand.

I wonder who the "foreign nationals" were?

Thailand, like the Woke West, is getting very coy about naming a certain vocal and violent demographic when they misbehave.

"I wonder who the "foreign nationals" were?"

The report didn't say that there were any foreigners arrested.  Do you just expect them to name some random West Africans?

Good point, but it might not apply in this case.

A highly profitable long-running scam, it certainly wasn’t impeded by low IQs and/or impulse-control issues.

This lot could be any of the flotsam that wash up on these shores.

Easy enough to say the older women were stupid for being tricked - but it's babystep-by-step stuff clouded by emotion.

I never thought I'd get scammed in my life and I did - and badly - but got the money back and only just...blind confidence...

"happens to other people"
