Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Still a very comfortable markup

Current Byd seal pricing

  • BYD SEAL Dynamic model, price 999,900 baht  this price includes Thailand 7% VAT which if we remove price becomes 929,207 baht add 10% UK import tax = 1,022,897.7 plus 20% vat final price 1,227,477.24 which coverted into GBP at rate 43.63 Baht to sterling comes out at £28,130 against uk Price of £45,705 a difference of £17,575 or 766,797 baht

  • For any existing Seal owner that is thinking about permanently moving back to blighty and if they keep the vehicle in Thailand for 12 months and then apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence (TOR) if TOR is approved then import duty is 0% and vat is zero rated 0% of course need to factor in cost of changes for uk spec and shipping charges but a 12 month old Thai version of any car but if we stick with a BYD SEAL Dynamic at £21,297 + cost for any changes for UK spec and shipping costs versus 12 month old UK byd seal starting prices from £31k

  •

Then compare with the Chinese specs and price:

BYD Seal 2025 in China, comes with LiDAR and 800V architecture, starting at 860,000 baht.

Your assumption Thailand will follow, is I believe, false.   Two completely separate markets with separate circumstances.   What kickstarted the EV revolution here was BYD & GW

I predict that some governments will only approve level 5 autonomous driving if it is LIDAR and not Vision based.  TeSSla have gone down a blind alley.

The European Sealion 7 vs the Thai version has differences:

- 91.3 kWh battery, vs 82 kWh on Thai model

- 800V system vs 400V

- DC Fast charge: 230kW vs 150kW

I think the Thai version being priced right is already quite good. the RWD at 1.1Mb is a bargain, if the car doesn't have flaws and issues.

FYI for everyone listening in, below webpage gives a layman's overview of the current 6 different levels of autonomous driving....levels 0 thru 5.

And I wonder what level of autonomous driving the Jetson's car had?   😉

Saved ฿900k today ... peeked at the Riddara RD6 and didn't buy it :cheesy:

Nice truck ... but ... not enough leg room for me, and I'm only 175 cm, w/71 cm leg inseam.   That was with seat all the way back, and down a bit.   Too far down, and when adjusting up, does move even a bit more forward.

Funny you should mention an Riddara RD6 as one of my neighbor's on my 10 houses soi just drove to his house in a brand new, red tag  Riddara RD6 truck....a green color that really catches your eye. The hum of its A/C was very obvious as it drove by me.  He's in his front yard right now trimming some small trees....he comes by every few weeks for a few hours to check on the house as he's been trying to sell it for years (at a overpriced amount....which is why it hasn't sold yet)....his primary home is elsewhere in Bangkok.

Throughout my large moobaan consisting of around 400 houses as I do my frequent dog walks around the moobaan I'm slowly seeing more and more BEVs parked in driveways....the transition from ICEV to EV is slowly and steadily continuing.

Oh this is really bad news. I was looking forward to the RD6 and I m still 8cm taller.

Nice truck, but you're definitely not going to fit.   I could not stretch my legs all the way out.  I would definitely cramp up, be very uncomfortable after 30 mins of driving.

Not a fan of the wide console between the front seats, and for a large truck, seems cramps for driver & front passenger.  Was a bit disappointed myself.   As only other options, are a BYD Shark, hybrid, and a very plush / expensive, SAIC / MG / MAXUS, should be arriving to TH soon, in 2.5M price range.

Even in our (short 432cm) B-class MG ZS SUV, I can stretch out legs al the way.   Though any taller than me, and wouldn't be able to.

I definitely would not buy an EV. I think they should be available if you want one but they are not for me. I will stick to ICE vehicles.

So my brother in the UK has an Audi e-Tron. They are trying to push subscriptions on him for things like swooshy indicators. Not sure who would pay, but I guess they are all scrambling to make up for falling sales, or to make as much money as they can while they can.

Are any of the Chinese brands doing anything like this? Or is it is just you get all the options if you buy the top spec and that's it. I would hate to see subs coming in and for that to be normalised.

And amazing that indicators not only identify that the car is turning but also in which direction! What new fangled technology!

On another note I hate swooshy indicators, normal flashing ones are so much clearer to other road users, but that's a rant for another day.

Yeah well, this is a little bit out of my budget. Lets see if the price war continues and the shark falls to 1M.

And yeah @Photoguy21, I m running a Diesel where you could do 1000km without stopping. But I d rather have something that goes 300km which I can charge for free. Solar is a no brainer if you have a house or land and if you are not completely unable to do manual work yourself.

But if you can pay for petrol, it is nice, unfortunately not everyone is rich.

Currently driving a HONDA CRV. My decision is based very much on engineering, not quality but limitations

If you like big SUVs I would suggest test driving a BYD Sealion 7. It costs ฿1,249,900 for the Performance variant and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. The entry-level Premium variant is priced at ฿1,149,900.

The CRV  is priced from ฿1,419,000 to ฿1,729,000. The AWD models take 9.4 seconds 0-100. The 2025 CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring can achieve the same in approximately 7.9 seconds but it does have a battery and an electric motor.

This is just ridiculous. Seriously. Pay subscription fees for turning indicators.

No wonder the European automobile industry is going down the drain.

I'll give it another decade to completely disappear. All brands and manufacturers will be based in China then.

Yeah, I agree. A desperate move and it leaves a bad taste - very "Appley".

Very glad non of the Chinese marques have gone down that route (I think), they seem to just give you as much as they can.

I asked earlier in this thread how to turn off the “telemetry“ no one seemed  bothered but this is all part of it ...drive by subscription very Black Mirror- ish. They have warned you !

Don’t laugh, my son in Australia pays a subscription for toys for his daughter… I think it’s Aud$200 every 3 months but don’t quote me on that bit.

The toys are replaced/upgraded every 3 months… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Ha ha and now I still get no answer just a thumbs down again

...why ?

These electric vehicles all have tracking/telemetry remote “upgrades“ and off switches but you are not concerned...well like I said, they have warned you....

new AN rule 39a doesn't allow me to answer, per my usual way.  If wanting to know how, you could have simply Googled ... "how to turn off the telemetry of an ev" ... as I just did, and the answer is there.

Of course useless to you, since not owning or interested in an EV, along with probably different for each make & model, possibly, and why nobody answered as have better things to do.  Do you own a BEV ?  I assumed you don't, since such a silly query.

Me ... waiting for torrents (3) to finish downloading.

Can someone tell me how to replace a camshaft in a diesel, as I may own one, before I die, or not.

No I don't own an electric vehicle partly because I disagree with the inbuilt telemetry/tracking and updatable OS etc.

Also my ICE vehicles are

functioning perfectly well without any of the above intrusive spying so I'll  use them till they are no longer useable,

I'm doing my bit for the “enviroment" by not throwing away perfectly usable stuff.

My question was aimed at all EV users, are they not concerned about the intrusive tracking and telemetry

Inherent in these vehicles?

Rule 39a. Is that to do with using AI to answer ?  Yeah I don't use that either !!!

You believe that is possible with BEV's only? Keep on dreaming,

What does this have to do with telemetry and data collection?

I'm shocked that you don't understand the connection..the car is in constant contact with the maker and they can update the software when they please..they are in control over something you paid good money for not you.

It will become a subscription model but worse.

I think this is just part of Audi's "optional" Audi Connect Function on Demand which allows a person to buy "upgrades/more features" to certain functions on their Audi.....this program has been around for years.

It's purely optional.   It's kinda like if you want to pay for more ringtones on your smartphone, buy addtional stickers/emojis for some phone apps like LINE, upgrade to ad-free Youtube, upgrade the GPS map system, add more options for turn signals, etc...etc...etc.   More and more electronics are now part of newer cars (EV and ICEV).....electronics which can do whiz-bang things and also connect to the internet.....opens up new revenue sources for car manufacturers.

Nobody needs to track my car.  I have a phone, a laptop, an ATM, debit, CC, a bank account.  Aside from CCTV & satellites.  My solar system inverter is online.  We have water & electric bills.  They already know my every move.    We could always go completely off grid, but why ?

I use Gmaps, they already know every place I've been.  Makro having a sale on tin foil ... stock up now.

Yeah, Jeez, it was just a question and I didn't expect it to turn in to a conspiracy theory discussion, but then this is AN and there are many paranoid people here. Like you said it is an option: some people may want it, some may not. That's it.

You use an iPhone - do you want to pay for extra cloud storage or not? Up to you.

You use FoodPanda - do you want to pay a membership for free deliveries and other benefits? Up to you. (And yes I know this is an obsolete example).

If you want to buy a base model of a car but subscribe for features of the more premium models that's up to you. Personally I don't like it but it's not a tracking device or anything to be scared of, it is just not a business model I really like for a car.

And for @johng who thinks this is Black Mirror - grow up. You think if the powers that be wanted to shut your bank account, or disable your ICEV they wouldn't be able to? Unless your car is a 20-year old model with no connectivity you are dreaming. My petrol car has internet connectivity, the nasty Black Mirror people could hack me and disable my ECU tomorrow if they wanted.
