Not buying one but had a good nosey round one at my local mall and loved it.

MG has stepped up the quality gradually recently from ZS to MG4 to Cyberster ( saw one of those in the flesh recently ) but these IM models are Lexus to Toyota.

In Seal/Sealion 7 style there is also a IM5 which is the Sedan version.

Not available here, yet, but I prefer the IM5 over the fugly ( imo ) rear end of the IM6.

Your assumption Thailand will follow, is I believe, false.   Two completely separate markets with separate circumstances.   What kickstarted the EV revolution here was BYD & GW

And NMC battery for the performance. LFP only for the standard model. Boooooo.

Yes, that could be a deal breaker for some.

I test drove one, it wasn’t the fast one, and I found it underwhelming.  I think the fast one would be a lot of fun.

Since the IM6  comes with a lithium-ion NMC battery I wonder if MG recommends routine charging to only 80% since lithium-ion batteries may degrade a lot faster when routinely charging to 100% as compared to LFP batteries.

But hey, even if MG does recommend 80% for routine, daily charging and 100% charging only for long trips it appears the IM6 battery comes with a "lifetime/no kilometer limit" warranty on the battery;  not some typical 8 year/160K km warranty.  That's good.   I expect the lifetime warranty would wipe-away anyone concerns of "babying the battery" to only 80% since daily/routine charging to 100% (if desired/required) shouldn't hit the owner in the pocket book some day because they always charged to 100%.   Yea, yea, I know, some people don't even keep their cars long enough to reach the warranty limit.

Vehicle registrations for June 2025.   The BYD Atto had a BIG month....big increase compared to previous months.  BYD Dolphin still the king of the hill for the latest month and also so far for this year closely followed by the BYD Sealion 7.   See below 30 July 2025 autolife article partially quoted below.

To me a couple of interesting (i.e., caught my eye) sales/registrations for this calendar year;

1.   BYD Seal (sedan) registrations have sharply dropped since release of the BYD Sealion 7 (basically the SUV version of a Seal)

2.   BYD Atto had a big comeback for June

3.  Tesla Model Y has seen big increases for May and June...probably due to price reductions and people not as PO'ed at Elon.

4.  Neta V still selling at a steady rate despite Neta financial issues in China and other countries....hopefully it will work out for the company.

Thanks @Pib The key number for me was that EV registrations in Thailand for June were 29.3% of all vehicle registrations.

This is a list of EV sales in Thailand and Japanese manufactures don't make many EVs and the ones they do make are not very good

Honda, Toyota, and Nissan (Japanese manufacturers) are still dragging their feet by predominately remaining in the ICE and Hybrid world.   Mr Toyota is still peddling the future is hydrogen engines or some revolutionary new Toyota solid state battery or ICE engine (always just around the corner...a corner never reached) that will make EVs obsolete.

While Japanese car manufacturers have dragged their feet Chinese car manufacturers are capturing the world EV market with only Tesla being a major competitor in some countries.

At 250kbht for a new one, it can't be beaten.

Drives really well too, my only concerns are about long term reliability.

Grab Malaysia has stopped to use the very unsafe Neta's after they failed the NCAP Crash Test. If the Government in Malaysia will follow or there are no spares available anymore, Neta Malaysia promised to buy back all their Cars.

Due to the lowest ever issued Safety Rating (zero Stars) in History, they should be banned from the Roads in my Eyes.

Mainly nonsense imho, my Neta replaces a m/c so it has to be safer.

And as an old person I feel no need to drive faster than 60kph.

I don't understand why people love SUVs so much. But as with many things, it's personal preference....

I'd take the IM5 over the IM6 as well. Because I hate SUVs 🤣

Anyways, we still have three more years to pay for our MG4. Until then, who knows what car models are in the market by then...

For me it's because of greater "carrying stuff" capability...more "vertical" room when carrying stuff...a more versatile vehicle.  Like today I brought a chair to the mother in law's house....it barely fit in my Atto SUV...but it would never fit in the trunk of a sedan type vehicle like a Seal.

Ok. I get your point. But in that case I'm willing to pay for Lalamove rather than driving around with a bulky SUV. Again, that's my preference...

In the past, station wagons were a thing. I'd agree to buy one of these. But then SUVs came up and they basically disappeared.

I drive a Seal and I do find it uncomfortable to get in and out of.  The SeaLion is much easier, that said, I don't much like SUV's as they're inherently less stable, however, if I was in the market to buy one of those two cars, I'm not sure which one I would buy.

I carry things quite frequently that simply do not fit in the trunk of a sedan...but fit just fine in a SUV.  SUVs are very popular and versatile vehicles.

Yes, the getting in and out would be a lot easier if changing to a Sealion 7 and the boot space would be a lot bigger.

But i haven’t missed the extra storage as yet, the Seal boot is quite deceptive and the split rear seats are a welcome addition.

In fact i baptised the Seal early on by carrying some 2m lengths of pvc with ease, in previous cars they would be sticking out of the window !

Ironically the Seal boot is larger than my last car which was an SUV ( Haval Jolion ). I prefer the aesthetics of the Seal over the Sealion and don’t really think of the Sealion as an SUV ( Crossover maybe ? ).

If I do change the Seal, not planned as yet, it would be the Sealion 7 , my old bones ( getting older as we speak !! ) would thank me and the bigger boot would be better for the zimmer !!

I prefer the wheels on the Sealion 7 AWD too, and the ventilated wireless phone charger, and the dashboard.

Yeah, i just paid a visit to my local BYD showroom and took a closer look at the Sealion 7.

The auto sunshade is great and doesn’t make the visible glass very small as reported on the aftermarket auto sunshade you can fit to the Seal.

I initially thought it was an SUV version of the Seal but there’s a lot more to it, a lot of smaller differences which i think is great for someone to go from Seal to Sealion.

The UI is a lot different and i see recently Atto 3 owners in the U.K. have had an update to this ( or a very similar UI ), time will tell if it comes to the Seal.

It did seem to be lacking the adjustable bottom row of emojis that we have in the Seal but i imagine there will be some flexibility to get the Home Screen as you want it ( lacking on the Seal imo ).

The Atto in Thailand did get a major software update about 2 months ago.  Went from ver 1.8 to 1.10.1 which includes icons on the home screen bottom row now being adjustable...rearrangeable....can add and delete icons on the bottom row.  Bunch of other changes also.

This upgrade was the first major upgrade to be in  2 parts vs just 1 part.  Part 1 only took 23 minutes but part 2 took almost an hour....but it all went fine.  I haven't noticed any glitches but had to relearn some of the menus and settings locations that got changed around/renamed a fair amount.

Sounds like your Atto 3 update was very similar to the recent Seal update.

Some fb reports in the last few days that Atto 3 in the U.K. has updated to v2.0 and the UI has changed to some smaller widgets and a bunch of new wallpapers.

IMG_7069.jpeg.365ba58bda223c5767f3dc724c778e31.jpeg

Looks just like the Sealion 7 UI i saw in the showroom a few hours ago and the bottom row didn’t respond to the long press to adjust.

Of course the infotainment might have been in “ showroom mode “ to stop any meddling kids ( like me ! ) messing it up ! and bottom row is adjustable ?

Time will tell but the recent update ( Atto and Seal ) was large so would be surprised if it changed drastically again so soon.

For anyone who thinks EVs in Thailand are competitively priced:

image.jpeg.dd4777c54729729c6e807174770ca885.jpeg

Now take a look at the Australian prices...spoiler alert...it is much cheaper in Australia. (Long range model approximately 1.26 million baht)

Other brands like BYD and MG charge similar prices in Australia and Thailand even though Australia is a much richer country and the Thai government still subsidises their EVs.

Just done a quick check and the MG4 is considerable cheaper in Thailand than in Australia. The BYD Atto 3 is about the same price in both countries.

I don't think that Car companies really consider how wealthy a country is when they set prices, rather they consider the individual market conditions.

In the UK the MG 4 and BYD Atto 3 are both a lot more expensive than in Australia and Thailand and the UK remains one of the only Western country not imposing tariffs on Chinese-made cars.

For the MG 4, that is one of the locally produced models and they have cut the price in Thailand several times. Might be something to do with the local factory overcapacity and the fact if they don't sell enough locally produced models they will have to repay the subsidies on the Chinese imports.

And yes the individual market conditions are probably the main factor and it shows that Australia has a very competitive car market...Thailand not so much which is why outdated Toyota are still number 1.

The UK is a basket case and not comparable with the ridiculous 20% VAT plus 10% customs duty on car imports. Also there are millions of "disabled" people who get new cars for free. In the UK, the Motability scheme accounts for roughly 20% of all new car sales.

I keep reading about governments discounts for EVs - where can I find out about them?

Thanks
