Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Featured Replies

I remember way back when that a real 850cc Mini was very cheap to insure, but, if it were a 970, 1071 or 1275 Mini Cooper S it could be a problem, when in fact the actual power increase compared to todays' standards was minimal.

So I wonder how insurance companies come up with an annual insurance premium with these electric flyers.........🤫

It's nice to have, the only time I really appreciate the performance is on the 118 between Chiang Rai and Chiang Rai.  You can dispatch long lines of slow traffic between buses and trucks where it would otherwise be unsafe to do so.

No thermal run away? I don't know much about these new batteries but there's still different chemical processes confined to a small area, so no interaction would seem a stretch.

Insurance company actuaries rely on historical loss data and its likely that EV's and their owners are not giving them anything to be concerned about. This of course could change with increased ownership by young drivers for example.

What the AI Guru says about the "Zero" claim :-

In marketing material for EV batteries, a "Zero thermal runaway" claim means the battery is designed to stop the thermal runaway process at the cell level, preventing a dangerous, self-sustaining chain reaction from spreading throughout the battery pack. This is not an absolute guarantee that thermal runaway can never happen, but rather an assurance that the system is engineered with multiple safeguards to mitigate the risk and contain any event that does occur.

I guess MG have now got their act together because having unsigned warranty conditions puts both sides at risk legally.

One could  argue that MG's public announcement of the Lifetime Warranty is binding on them but that does not change the importance of needing signatures from both sides should problems arise in the future.

I did think about clausing the contract saying “nothing in here removes any rights or remedies prior to signing the contract” but I guess they wouldn’t wear that.

incidentally, in the UK for a contract to be binding, there has to be some consideration paid, hence contracts that let you buy a property for 1 pound.  I am not sure how it works in Thailand.

Our relatives had their BYD Dolphin and Honda City completely submerged in mud for 2 days in Hat Yai.

very sadly, both cars are total loss because the water was very muddy, there will be mud in every inch inside those cars.

She is pregnant for 8 months, and had to walk 2 km at 4am with the water level at the neck to reach safe locations. Now everyone is here safely.

So in the end drove the SO7, was ok good all round view, seats okay but didn’t have any quality feel.

Also tested the EO7 …nice inside and felt quality, I thought the ride a little firm even on the softest setting. BUT the view from the rear mirror, for me, was just not acceptable. It’s split and only the bottom half was clear. My wife said she didn’t have a problem … guess this shows that my eyes are not exactly good ….

So going to hang on a year and save up. Seems there are several, a little upmarket EVs coming …eg Atto 8. Let’s see what EXPO 2026 brings.

During the 2011 floods when the much of Thailand was flooded to include much of Bangkok we had to quickly evacuate our western Bangkok home the first few days of Nov 2011 and wasn't able to return to our Bangkok moobaan permanently  till 4 Dec once the water level had dropped to around 30cm throughout the moobaan.

On the day we evacuated in early Nov I drove the 2009 Toyota (which I still have) thru water approx 0.75 to 1 meter deep for around 500 meters at a steady approx 10kph in order to escape the moobaan with wife and 4 dogs in the SUV.   That slow, steady speed literally split the water away/around the engine compartment....the whole time I'm praying the Fortuner don't stall-out and it didn't....it just kept plowing thru the water till we got to the minimally flooded highway....we then drove 50Km to live with the wife's mother in a neighboring province for approx 30 days until the flooding receded at our home.

But before 4 Dec when we returned full time the wife and I did a mid Nov visit to our house when the water level in the moobaan averaged about 1 meter with some village roads up to 1.5 meters in place.  To get to our house we had to park the SUV about 1.5km away and then "walk-wade" for around 800 meters thru water that ranged from 1 meter to1.5 meter deep.   To this day I still remember the wife walking (wading) next to me with water up to her neck at times and fish sometimes swimming by in water that wasn't flowing....kinda like walking thru a shallow sea.   The water was fairly clear so we could see every step we made.

But we were determined to see our house first hand.   Fortunately since our house foundation was about a meter above soi level only about 20mm of water entered the house at one limited, low location in the house so damage was minimal....some cleaning and repainting that area.   We left the house a few hours later and fortunately a neighbor who had bought a row boat took us out of the moobaan back to our Fortuner parked on a major higher.

The wife and I will remember the 2011 floods and our flood experience till the day we die.

My understanding is until the vehicle is no longer available for the customer i.e. scrapped

Could be, but worth checking. What will MG do if a customer keeps their car for 30 years or more? Quite a liability for them if they have to keep spare parts for a lifetime.

The whole paragraph is about a customer's specific car, starting on the invoice date and so long as the customer's car is available, it's still under warranty.  I think it's pretty clear.  If you have it available, then it's under warranty.  It's got nothing to do with MG.

Well it is quite poorly translated from Thai so we can't be sure.

My son is looking at buying the Mg4 D model 519k standard range.

Seems a great price and as we are having solar fitted he knows he will be getting it charged for free

He probably rides around 50-60 km a day on his motorbike and moans about the cost of petrol and the fact he has to go 6km the wrong way to get fuel so i can see the appeal with it being EV.

He was looking at a few used EVs around 350-400k but if this lifetime warranty is as good as it says then it seems unbeatable.

Here's Google AI summary of the warranty....it states "MG4" because I searched for "MG4 lifetime warranty"....the same warranty would apply to other MG models covered by the lifetime warranty.   I bet this lifetime warranty is going to result in really high MG sales/reservations during the upcoming Motor Show/Promotion 28 Nov-10 Dec 2025.   Wouldn't surprise me if the MG4 is the best selling vehicle during the show due to the lifetime warranty.

*************************
Google AI Overview
The MG4 has a lifetime warranty on its high-voltage battery, electric drive unit, and power electronic bloc, but this offer is specific to MG Thailand. The warranty covers the original buyer and subsequent owners, with no mileage limit, but it requires adherence to specific conditions, such as regular maintenance at an official MG service center and proper charging practices.

Warranty details for the MG4 in Thailand
  • Covered components: The warranty applies to the high-voltage battery (HV Battery assy), electric drive unit (EDU), and power electronic bloc (PEB).
  • Owner coverage: The warranty is transferable to subsequent owners and has no mileage limit.
  • Eligibility: The warranty applies to the new MG4 electric as well as other specific EV models sold in Thailand.
  • Key conditions:
    • Scheduled maintenance: All scheduled services must be completed at an official MG service center.
    • Use: The vehicle must be used for "personal use" only, not for commercial purposes like taxi or rental services.
    • Modifications: No modifications to the high-voltage system or chassis are permitted.
    • Charging: Users must follow the manufacturer's guidelines for charging, including using standard-compliant chargers and maintaining the battery's state of charge within the recommended range.

Important exclusions and limitations
  • The lifetime warranty does not apply to models like the MG ZS EV, MG EP, or MG ES.
  • Damages from accidents, natural disasters, theft, or other extreme situations are not covered.
  • Ignoring the maintenance schedule or using the vehicle for commercial purposes will void the lifetime warranty.

So looks like BYD’s main focus at the Motor Expo is offering Lifetime Battery Warranty.

Seems like some models ( BYD and Denza )  pay 5k/10k depending on the model , seems largely for Dolphins and Atto 3( not sure if only new or retrospective ? )

Mazda 6e estimated price (CBU import from China):

Mazda 6e 1,xxx,000 baht, price not yet announced

It is a collaboration between Mazda – ChangAn that takes the Deepal L07 platform and redevelops it into the Mazda EZ-6 or Global Name uses the name Mazda 6e for markets outside of China, including Thailand.

This could definitely do well depending on price.

They are not giving much away though are they, 1,XXX,000 ? , basically what they are saying is it will be under 2 million !!

Right, although you could hazard a guess it will be similarly priced to the Deepal L07 otherwise you may as well just buy the Deepal unless you are a Mazda lover.

Still think an mg4 for an extra 120k would be a better deal especially with the warranty and the fact that i have heard of MG

Are Geely well known? sounds like a yoghurt
