100+ people treated for symptoms possibly caused by cannabis in food and drink in Khon Kaen

More than 100 people in Thailand’s north-eastern province of Khon Kaen have reported for treatment of dizziness and nausea after consuming food or drinks thought to contain cannabis.

 

Cannabis and hemp were decriminalised in the country on June 9th.

 

Cherdchai Ariyanuchitkul, deputy provincial health chief, said Friday that most of the patients suffered only mild symptoms, but one case was suffering psychiatric symptoms.

 

He said the provincial health office has launched a campaign to educate people in the province about the medical benefits of cannabis and its extracts and the health risks of their recreational use.

 

He also said that eateries will be urged not to use cannabis in food or drinks, although they are allowed to do so.

Sorry, I DON'T BELIEVE THEM! There, my yelling is done. I feel so much better. Pot has been used in Canada and most of the rest of the civilized world legally and illegally and never have there been reports of 100's being sick. When I was younger, I used to put a gram of hasch in coffee... now if anything will get you sick it would be that. The chemicals mixed in hasch... who knows what they are. Never been hospitalized for that. 

 

I have a feeling there is a lobby going against this newly acquired freedom and I cringe to think that this country might back track. This was one of the first changes I have seen that makes me believe in humanity once more. 

 

On the other hand, MAYBE (said with a small yell) some of the leaves used were sprayed with pesticides that might lead to being sick. 

 

Having coffee right now,  boy do I miss the hasch.

Perhaps there should be. Like ensuring that if people wish to use this herb for culinary purposes they must be washed several times to ensure that there are no traces of insecticide or other  chemicals  that may pose a danger for human consumption. Now I am not saying this was the issue on this occasion as it could have been a reaction from the herb itself but better to be safe than sorry.

Well we don't know if either of these things are true and it's most likely neither so let's not put the cart before the horse eh? Never heard or seen reported any mass poisonings due to cannabis in my lifetime.  This...

Is a pretty baseless statement lacking any real proof. Food or drinks? Thought?

this is most likely what has happened. or it had mold etc.

 

did all those inflicted source the contaminated product from the same seller ? so little information provided. 

 

how much did each person consume ?

what was it they actually ate ? was it infused cannabis edibles or just fan leaves ? 

was it all on the same day or did it happen over time since june 9 ? 

how were the edible products made ?

what method of extraction ?

was there residual material left over from the extraction ? 

did the maker understand the conversion for mg per serving ? 

did the consumers know what level if any of thc they were consuming ? 

 

odds are brick weed was used in the food. big no no. some really horrible stuff. the oil that comes from this weed tells the whole story. maybe from laos too. ewwww

 

nasty nasty stuff.

What about luck of anything similar from the rest 75 provinces?

Maybe there is a local bug spreading there causing those symptoms?

Medics only suspect it might have been from ganja, but they only speculate. 

There always can be allergic reaction to any food or drink, but rather when eaten in large quantity, with some other symptoms and with proven direct connection.

Do people go to doctor or hospital with mild dizziness and nausea and how they are treated?

Possible a case of overzealous health official trying to prove his convictions about ganja?

sounds to me like very psychosomatic! they believe it so strong so that it happens!

they should be well informed, this is all in the beginning of this change, later everyone will be used to it! ????

If you read the full story there is a  signature lobby, to revoke the ministerial regulation until the 'Law has been passed by parliament'

Cannabis in Cambodia is illegal. This prohibition is enforced opportunistically. Many "Happy" restaurants located in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville publicly offer food cooked with marijuana, or as a side garnish.(Definitely not for me)

You can put all the leafs you want in soup or other dishes,it can not get you high!

More needs to be done to the leafs before the THC is active,another "we are all

going to hell" story.

Many off the road places in Thailand have been using leafs for cooking for 100's

of years.

Nothing to see here folks,just move on.

Just one more thing,i believe in order to be able to comment about the abuse of

cannabis you should at least have used it one time.

I don't understand - If we are all so concerned about the side effects of the things we put into our bodies I wonder if we will have a parallel report from various hospital agencies about the hundreds of people (may be thousand) who turn up rat arsed at the hospitals after overdoing the sauce.

Hash short for hashish, In all my years I have never heard of chemicals being mixed in hash. Hash is simply the resin that is collected from the buds.

Yeah, pure hasch. It is cut in so many ways. Hair dye, in Canada there was a bust once and they found horse poop that the dealers were going to cut it with. If ever you got the pure unaltered stuff, well, you are one of the few in this world. Good for you if you did.

I think it’s bulllarky….  never seen it in my days of participating. My Pops when I’d visit asked if I wanted to try his homemade pot brownies…. I’d just look shaking my head uhhh no thanks. Thought

the brownie thing was too gimmicky. I smoked but never around my Pops or children… it was the proper way of doing it.. ohh this was late 60s ,.. 70s… 80 ish..
