Thaksin warns of ‘Bangkok model’ in next elections, questions planned foreign land buying law being considered by Prayut

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra came out to warn the government of 2014 coup leader Prayut Chan-ocha, that the incumbent Premier should be wary of the changing tides in the general public’s sentiment and that Prayut’s days in office are numbered.

 

“I would like to warn that the next elections could be like what happened in Bangkok,” Thaksin said in a late-night talk on Clubhouse.

 

Thaksin, who undertakes his bi-weekly talk came out to say that some businessmen he has met with told him that they have offered the incumbent government of Bangkok – Chadchart Sittipunt, lots of money for his campaign but Chadchart had refused saying that these businessmen could keep the money and if and when the need arises, he would tap into these funds, but Chadchart never tapped those funds.

Hypocrite, says the guy who owns property in many other countries.

This is a man from Chinese ancestors, who emigrated like many Chinese over the last 140 years, from a cool climate to a hot climate of Siam/Thailand, with different languages, customs, telling all other foreigners, 'They shouldn't own land, only lease, not fair to the poor people'

 

I will repeat, a Chinese family emigrating from China, and telling other foreigners 'They shouldn't own any land'

 

Chinese translation, only Chinese immigrants can own land, all you other competitor race immigrants Cannot

I love the way they always say stopping foreigners owning land is about keeping land prices low for the poor Thai people.

 

In reality it's about keeping prices low and ensuring there is no competition for the Thai Elites to buy vast swathes of cheap land from the very same poor Thai people, often via the banks repossessing said land that has been put down as collateral on high interest loans when the borrower defaults.

 

All the while, the same Thai Elites are free to buy land in Europe with their ill gotten gains.

 

It's ironic that while Thaksin wants to stop foreigners buying tiny amounts of land in Thailand, he cannot even set foot on Thai soil without facing arrest. He's still vastly better than Prayut though.

What a load of old cobblers. A handful of people would buy land under that one sided scheme. They come out with the same tired old drivel over and over. Truth is, most Thais will not entertain the concept of ‘selling their country out’ but are happy to take in huge profits from foreigners and also buy lands in their countries unhindered.

Double surprised at this however, in that Thaksin is being a dinosaur and Prayut is becoming progressive.

ALL leaders here are corrupt but he was the first and only one to give things to the poor in Thailand.

Yes - vote buying, but lots of farmers and rural folk were grateful to him.

The rich living in Bangkok and military housing  have done nothing for the poor.

Another questions is how many that wish to invest 40 million baht in Thailand to obtain a long term visa, the 40 million baht investment visa is already available with the option of 1 rai of land ownership, the difference is 3 years binding period in the new proposal compared to 5 years bonding period in the existing terms.

Many ethnic groups emigrated to Siam from native southeast Asia, Southern China and North East India. Government policies during the 1930s and 40s resulted in successful force assimilation of the many various ethno-liquistic groups in the country into the dominant Thai people, language and culture. Same as in Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. You seem to take a historic shortcut to make your point.

Wouldn't 40 million Baht buy you citizenship in a lot of places? And with citizenship, an automatic right to buy and own land?

Portugal for ex.
Buy a property for at least 500k $EUR and get the right to stay and travel wherever you want in Europe.

Yes, that's 500k EUR for your own house, no other investments needed, no running of a company or employing locals.

That's around 18 Million Baht and it's for the house and land that you own.

Plenty of Chinese and Brazilians bought properties.

This is a Thai problem, therefore any Thai buying land in a foreign country should lose their Thai citizenship ands all rights to land in Thailand.

I think UK land ownership should be on a quid pro quo basis with ANY country - we can't buy land there, you can't buy land here. Simple.

No this is the worst thing that could be done. I am delighted that in Thailand the rich elite through various practices steal from the middle and lower classes and then go overseas and give all that money to foreigners when they buy land. Thank you for the money Thailand.

That money the rich elite are giving to foreigners is likely to be to Qatari or Russian foreigners, not the British state...

As the 40 mil seems to be only tied up for 3 years you're not really spending it. You do get it back if you want to. However it's not clear if you can still keep the land ( you still have to pay for ) or have to sell it to a Thai.

The Chinese man from Chinese immigrants is in the article in this thread, who is telling other immigrant foreigners, they shouldn't own any land, if it was a Malay/Thai saying the same thing, I would still question the immigrant in question

 

Please learn about 2000 years history of these lands, not 100 years,
