Growing basmati rice in Thailand?

Featured Replies

Sitting in my local curry house in Bangkok, I was pondering over the possibility of growing basmati rice here in Thailand.

Does anyone know if it's done? Or what restrictions there might be in importing and growing the seed imported from India?

You need permission from the MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND COOPERATIVES.

As a fellow lover of basmati rice could someone tell me if there is a locally grown variety that is close in terms of taste and texture?

Don't think it will be profitable to grow and sell basmati rice in Thailand.

Thais love their jasmine and sticky rice. Imported rice from India or Pakistan is relatively cheap, too

Of course it is possible, this is Thailand. For the farmer, the question is what is the volume of rice needed and the price paid. We grow Hom Mali 105 (jasmine) and mill our rice on farm for family use and for retail sale. Anyone that wants me to grow another type of rice has only got to ask and stump up for the costs.

Friends grow many different organic heritage types. Anything is possible if there is a market.
