Maybe time to make lynching drunks that injure or kill

people law , sell the vehicle off to help the family of victim,

wonder how many it would take before they realised that

DUI is not to be tolerated , quite a few I think as they are

This is only new because of the locals lynching and arresting him.

This country is in the sad and sorry state of accidents like this happening every day. But they make a big deal in the news out of so many other things. I'll leave that there, rather than elaborate.

Interesting to see the other day that drunk driving only counts as three of your twelve demerit points on the driving licence, so you can drive drunk four times in a year and still not be suspended from driving. Only if you drive for a fifth time and are caught will you be disqualified for 3 months.

 

Ridiculous leniency that will not discourage the drunks.

Nothing substantial will happen to the drunk drivet. He will pay compensation, throw a few bucks to the RTP's drinking fund and then he will be behind the wheel again doing what he does best. 

 

Thailand isn't unique in asia with this problem.

Where does it say the driver was an alcoholic? Regardless, no sympathy here (and in any case, some alcoholics would be better drivers, despite their blood alcohol level, than someone who'd just been on the lash).

I remember years ago there were signs on roadside trees which stated in Thai “ if drunk, don’t drive”

Before someone says it.. drugs and driving also dont mix and same applies.

Most (All?)European countries will have jail time for causing death while driving drunk. U.K. recently increased the maximum penalty  (death by dangerous driving = being drunk) to 14 years . 
You’ll find it very difficult and expensive to get insurance after a drink conviction too,probably impossible if you’ve killed some one.

Whilst I totally agree the Drunk Drivers should be branded " Terrorists ', I cannot help but think that " Murderers " is a better branding.

All the better I got nothing against drinking though not a big fan give me pot any day (though i would not drive on either). But people who are under the influence of anything and drive are the worst. Selfish people putting others at risk. Punishment for those should be really high especially if they wound or kill someone.

Suggest what ever punishment you like for Drunk Driving, it will not make any difference if the law is not enforced.

Enforcing the law, as many here will know, is down to the RTP, so, of course, it is not enforced.

it is not the penalty, but the certainly of being caught and punished that makes public obey any law.

I assume you wrote this in jest. Or you did the Thai politician thing and spoke without engaging brain first. Any alcoholic should be automatically banned from driving, the same as a person with any other disease such as epilepsy which can impair their driving skills. No ifs or buts. Anyone who attempts to operate a killing machine when drunk deserves prison time, alcoholic or not. No ifs or buts. And don't wait until they've killed or injured someone. Breath-test and jail if over the limit. No ifs or buts.

When I visit the Beaches I go to those with almost no "Farang" visitors. The beach is usually crowded to the brink with Thais by late afternoon and cars parked everywhere. Almost all Thai's around us drink alcohol. Then by evening you have to be very careful when driving back home, as all Thai drivers from the beach seem to drive like zombies, slowly and in flocks.

When I see people driving slowly I automatically assume it's because they're drunk or have no license. Or both.

My wife said the Police were going to take him away without a breath test (and no doubt receive some incentive not to take one). It was only the pressure from the thais there that forced the Police to take a breath test.

Murder requires premeditated intention to kill. This is manslaughter which can also carry a very high tariff sentence based on the circumstances (drunk is very high tariff)
