The family of the manager of Mountain B who went back into the flames at the nightclub to help customers has been presented with a check for more than a million baht by Labour minister Suchart Chomklin.

The presentation by ministerial aide Suthep Chityawong to  Benjamaporn Klaisaeng, the mother of Wiriya Tengsagna, 31, was made at the temple of Wat Pa Yup in Sattahip, reported INN

The payment was work related benefits for Wiriya's descendants comprising 50,000 baht in funeral expenses, 1,008,000 for dying while doing his job and other benefits totalling 1,082,711.46.

Benjamaporn said she first heard about the fire at 1.30 am when she saw on the news that 13 had died.

At 3 am her daughter-in-law called to say she could not contact her son.

Then friends called with the tragic news and a picture of her dead son.

She said that staff had told her that he had initially escaped the inferno but had tried to go back in and save others.

He lost his life by the entrance to the venue.

Really a photoshoot of the handing over cheque the "grieving" family in a temple, just when you thought people couldn't stoop any lower.

I don't know ... The Mountain B "show bags" presented to the ladies were, to my mind, lower

Been to many but never had the Minister of Labour at one, nor been to one where the death occurred due to negligence of the authorities to ensure safety yet felt it fitting for a top official, a member of that self same authority to actually attend and have the brass neck to present a cheque.

It's common for organisations, departments or companies to show up and present that, depending on the situation and person. Clearly you just didn't know and whine about how we are used to handle deaths and cremations.

This was not a normal death in service so your comment was disgraceful and showed your complete ignorance of the facts when the deceased died due to the negligence of the authorities whose representative turned up for the photo op and cheque.

What percentage, if any, do the Police or local authorities get from that cheque?

as it was mafia run establishment (according to bangkok post article 2 days ago) and that top police were already transferred from this station, this ministerial money will help all those involved in running this illegal pub. They might need it to hire top class defence team - just in case they happen to be prosecuted. Or to bribe some officials (even those from the ministry of employment) to drop some charges as "misunderstandings" and such

This man had fled to safety. And yet, he returned to the flames to try and save others. Nothing can diminish that selfless act.

A man's gotta do what a man does.

True ..... but as the manager he also had a responsibility to ensure fire exits were clear and properly signed.  He should have trained his staff in emergency evacuation drills too.  If he had survived, he'd be in jail now.

The customers were the true victims of the combined failures of the owner and the manager.

As long as Thailand dont enforce their own laws to Thai, you have the "mai pen rai" system working.

In Songkhla for instance, four people died on gas in a sewer. And it could have been way more.

Traffic, no enforcement Thai law by police. Broken down vehicles on the road,

people arent trainend and ignore. Every day an average of 40 people die in traffic in Thailand.

So who can we blame all that, Prayuth?

I can go on with the listing but makes no sense. Thailand is another world.

A photo op with an enlarged check at a temple. Sorry for their loss but how sick is that presentation and those that took part in it. Presented to the Mother and not the wife of the deceased I note.

All it needs is Bruce Forsythe manically grinning at one side and saying, "Good game! Good game!"

Sorry, but no toaster.

It is the way things are done here, not so important one gives, more important one is seen to be giving.

How much are the 14 or so customers who died families going to get each?

That last point is a very valid question as all human life is precious, irrespective of ones position in the world, so payments should be equal for the families of those who lost loved ones. But guess it won't be the case unfortunately.
