The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is considering accepting Chinese-made engines for the S26T Yuan-class submarine to replace the German-made MTU396 diesel engine, which had been rejected for export to China by the German company.

RTN spokesperson Pokkrong Monthatphalin told the press today, August 10th, that the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co. (CSOC) had previously offered its CHD620 diesel engine for the submarine.

The company held a talk with the Navy on Tuesday, August 9th, and gave details about the specifications of their modified engines for the S26T submarine. The RTN is currently in the assessment process of the engine details and the process is expected to be finalized on September 15th, the spokesperson stated.

"offered its CHD620 diesel engine for the submarine"

CHD620 is a Deutz diesel pumping engine.

CHD622 is a diesel marine propulsion unit, licence built/developed in China, also from Deutz.

As is the TBD620.

Neither are "knockoffs".

The same applies to the many marine propulsion units manufactured in China.

All licence produced.

Sorry to spoil the fun.

PS The reason that Japan produced some outstanding aircraft pre-WW2 was because it kickstarted its post-WW1 industry by licence producing foreign designs.  The same applied to its motorcycle industry post-WW2.  The "copying" myth is exactly that........a comforting myth for Westerners who complacently passed on the baton of technological development.

Have a nice day.

Well no surprises, a Navy which is unable to crew its white elephant an Aircraft carriet is now buying second rate engines for its second hand submarines, which all navies have said is a useless purchase for the Navy.. But then it is NOT their money is it, but the PUBLICS !"!!

Thais really have better things to worry about so this is unlikely to cause a fuss. What’s the point of submarines with no engines? Get some cheap and at least look glorious before the fuel price rises to the level that they can’t refill them.

I don't see why they can't just jam a longtail in them when they get them.

was there ever any doubt ?

I would have thought they would have made sure they could get the engines they actually wanted before putting pen to paper on the subs.

But now at least they should be able to sail them into port for show.

I am sure that there is also consideration by someone in the RTN about an appropriate rebate coming to an account soon...

Why?  The first steel was cut on  4 September 2018 at Wuhan, China!

Even if they do not commission until 2228 they would still not be "second hand" just a long time getting built! (for a conventional SSK that is but not tor an SSN or SSBN!)

The Chinese will probably supply the Engines for the Subs free of charge.

However there will be a huge sum to pay for the wind up Keys.

This administration likes to drone on and on about what they are doing for the people. A good place to start would be the submarines. Give them up. What are you going to do with them anyway? Who will pilot them? No subs for 60 years, and all of a sudden you have the expertise to pilot and maintain them? Hello.

Show the people you care.  22 billion is the official number. But, since the first one is already up to 13 billion, the numbers simply do not add up. As usual.

Do you care one iota about the people? Just be honest, for once, and admit that you don't.

As they maybe are reverse engineered MTU engines or duplicated German engines I would not be happy.

Besides, it is getting a bit long in the teeth this buy, so the design is oldfashioned.

Downgraded already before purchase.. hope the warranty is water tight?

pun intended.

What about those Chinese inboard Diesel engines used on the Bangkok canal boats?  They seem to work OK, with only an occasional explosion or two…

I think the plan is to install remote control chips from the PLA. Also to save more money the subs will be crewed by the PLA for the first 10 years while Thai training takes place.

Fishing boat captains in the Gulf will be quite worried if these things ever set sail. ????

Well then you are very happy to hear, they also buy F35's which can not shoot.

They are looking for people to sit on the wings and shoot.
