Thailand’s bio-circular economy and the problem of imported trash

In the eyes of critics, Thailand’s Waste Management Master Plan has trashed the country’s waste problem to the point that it risks becoming the world’s dumping ground. Not only is Thailand struggling with its own waste, but Thais are also being overwhelmed by imported garbage.

Thailand has in fact banned the importation of several types of waste, including municipal garbage as well as electronic and plastic trash. Yet they continue to be imported due to loopholes, exemptions, leniency, and ineffective enforcement.

Nobody knows exactly how much trash has been illegally imported over recent years. However, the amount flowing through the loophole of false declarations is thought to be huge. Usually, illegally imported waste is only ever detected when authorities are tipped off in advance.

Why Thailand doesn't educate people to separate green waste and municipals set up compost areas instead of everything going to landfill ? As most know there are recycle yards. I would like to know where all the perishables go from places like Tops Makro Big C Lotus seems billionaires would rather dispose of it to landfill then help the needy where there is no profit in it for them !

I was hiking around in my area for several kilometers and the amount of plastic bags, cups and other garbage you see on the roadside and in the water is amazing. I don't understand why people throw their rubbish out of the window of scooter instead taking it home. Besides that it very hard to find a public bin where ever you go.No wonder so much garbage import it illegal because Thailand doesn't have enough of its own...

Who had the idea of importing trash? What's the point of it?

They are getting paid for it. China is exporting a lot of garbage and pay countries to take it.

Very sustainable, right?

I guess it comes prepackaged like that before someone at the company unpacks it and spreads it around Thailand's roads !

When trash has move value than us maybe we should start packing our bags. Please remember garbage doesn't complain, it only takes up space.

In a word corruption.

Also China imported plastic waste, not only Thailand. Also Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia

They mentioned once to stop this, already long time ago.

They get paid for it , otherwise why would you import?

An easy way to get rit of it then is dumping it in the oceans, 8000000 MILLION TONS/year.

Dumping is even more profitable then, it seems.
