A Phuket police officer has been sentenced to 25 years in jail after shooting a noodle vendor in Patong in February last year, 2021.

Our previous story:

Police Corporal Pornthep Channarong, 25, reportedly told the police that he was heavily intoxicated when he went out to celebrate his transfer and reportedly shot vendor Aroon Thongplub.

The defendant must pay compensation to the victim within 20 years for the total of 7,992,500 baht.

However the defendant has provided good cooperation to the court. The punishment has been decreased to 25 years and four months in prison with a 1,000 baht fine and to pay compensation to the victim of 7,992,500 baht.

It is always an extraordinary thing here, when an active cop gets a prison sentence. A victory for the people, for sure.

I do not think I would be giving the thumbs up if I had sadly been reduced to a wheel chair at the hands of a drunken gun weilding cop. Very tragic for the victim. If the force were held accountable for the financial actions of their members such as paying compensation ... we might see more "will" to reduce these types of crime.

Heavily intoxicated policeman , mentally unstable , but armed with a gun .

And ready to use it .

Life is becoming more and more kind of a gamble in Thailand .

Why do they not have a compensation scheme as other countries do regarding the police force. I believe in the U.K. it is called the CICA.

I appreciate that policemen, and Women, are only human, however, surely part of their job description is that they are always deemed to be on duty.

Therefore, on down time and getting drunk, leave any firearms safely locked away.

A Government funded scheme for compensation would at least ensure this man received his money, which, sadly at the moment is as far away as our nearest star.

Drinking while carrying a gun is criminal idiocy.  It's common in many countries but should be illegal, with the law aggressively enforced, everywhere.

Let’s hope he has accumulated

B8 mil in his planned retirement fund already.

he’ll be planning for his release in 2 years!!!

At least in Thailand they punish cops for this. In the US they do not. I wish I could post my website here. I have really improved it over the last two years. I have a website about this issue in America. I would like to compare this case to American cases because at least there’s justice in law enforcement in Thailand more than I can say for America. But I don’t know if I want to mix Thailand with my USA online project about a local election in North Carolina.

Wait a sec... 25 years in prison but must pay almost 8m Baht in compensation in 20 years?

Shirley shome mishtake?

What is the point of the 1,000 fine?

I am sure the Vendor will be looking forward to receiving the Compensation 8 Million Baht ????

Has more chance of buying a lotto ticket and winning ????

One way to celebrate your transfer... didn't work-out to well.

That was a horrible incident.  I believe it left of the victim paralyzed.

Well he is being transferred. Just not where he thought.

So the cop celebrated his transfer and shot the vendor??

Ok then, the vendors thumb is usable and so would be his trigger finger?

So why not give him the cops gun to give the cop what he gave out, and would save the government 25 years of prison costs?

Then give the injured vendor a decent payout now from the projected savings?

Business is business,    and let the punishment fit the crime.

the police were fighting tooth and nail to get this corporal off... about a year back the corporal completely changed his story (recanting his confession) saying that he was no longer guilty and had broken up a fight between two parties...there were stories of new witnesses coming forward explaining that they saw the corporal intervening to stop a fight and accidently injuring the vendor in the process.

And all this web of lies created (by the police) despite a video clearly showing the corporal point the gun and shoot the vendor at point blank!!! Honestly, you could not make this s@?t up!!!!

Now, he is given 25 years with 20 years to pay compensation... makes me wonder if a deal has been done, something along the lines of go to jail, do one or two years jail time and don't bother paying any compensation. You'll be out, scot-free with all your money at the age of 27. Deal!

Haha.
Good ol’ Johnny Cash

Initially I thought, good justice being seen in Thailand, then....8mil fine to be paid whilst doing the 25 years! If he has assets to the value of 8 mil which are handed over to the victim, different story.

Or with a clause that if the 8 mil is not paid by family and friends within 8 years the 25 years is jacked up to life without any possibility of pardons etc.

Country is a joke.

I think it's possible if the plod was able to work the jail 'Gloryhole' for 20 years.

These spoilt children should not be allowed to carry guns.

I don't think he will last 25 days in prison nevermind 25 years.

Let's hope.....

They get looked after in jail. They will be given jobs educating life's basic. Policeman who lived  next-door to me shot dead 2 family friends and wounded his wife by shooting her in the mouth. Sentenced to life in jail which is 33 years max. With pardons and good behaviour he'll be unlucky if he does 15 years.

And perhaps will be reduced to 25 months due to good behaviors.

Cops in Thai jails: usually transferred from jail to jail few times and released when public attention disappears.

Why these are these icture people giving thumbs up? or is he the victim?, if so then he survived and cop still got 25yrs.

As long as murderers are included in the pardon scheme I have problem beleaving that policemen will serve time.
