Popular Post webfact Posted August 25, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 25, 2022 Picture: Thai Rath The 17 year old girl in Chainat who has had HIV since she was in her mother's womb, been bullied and faced stigma has been overwhelmed by the generosity of Thais and foreigners alike. Nong Jaa's mum died, her father was sent to prison and her and her grandfather barely had 3,000 baht a month to make ends meet. Now she just wanted to finish school and get to university and make a life for herself and her grandfather. Thai Rath and local officials recognised her plight and an appeal was started with donations being sent to Jaa's GSB bank account. Within just one day the donations had reached 948,248 baht, reported Thai Rath who were at the school in Sankhaburi, Chainat, central Thailand where Jaa studies and is a competent and dilligent student. "Wow" said an amazed Jaa after two teachers who are managing her account came back with the good news while she was doing her homework. ""I never thought people would be so kind, I've never seen so much money in my whole life". Jaa thanked Thailand's reporters, news organisations, her teachers, provincial reps and most of all the huge number of people who had donated. She promised that all the money would be spent wisely and appropriately. ASEAN NOW readers joined in with the donations sending tens of thousands of baht according to posts. And that was just the people who reported sending money and the amounts. Jaa added: "Thanks from this little girl from the bottom of my heart". Picture: Thai Rath One of the teacher's who has helped set up the account, Naowarat Sricham said that it would not be linked to an ATM card. She said that the school director had set up a committee of trustees who will make sure that the money is spent properly. Apart from the cost of university it will be used to make Jaa and her grandfather's living conditions better as well as pay daily, monthly and yearly expenses as appropriate. Another of the teacher advisors, Chuleekorn Pinkaew, said that teachers had addressed the problem of Jaa being bullied. "There are no bullies now," she said. "It was explained to the children that this virus is not something that can be passed on easily and that everyone should live together in a spirit of harmony and not cause stress to others". ASEAN NOW would like to thank all our expatriate readers who responded positively to the story and of course those who made donations. The news team is thrilled that our members have played their part in making Jaa's life better and giving her a future that she can look forward to with renewed hope for herself and her grandfather. Popular Post NightSky Posted August 25, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 25, 2022 Good luck JAA. Even though the medicine is so good now that you can live your life without harm from the virus and you can have children without passing on the virus, just like other people, my prediction and hope is that there will be a cure in your lifetime so the stigma can end quickly too. Keep smiling young lady. ???? 42 5

Popular Post BKKTRAVELER Posted August 25, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 25, 2022 Today was such a good day with so many members of Asean Now coming together and helping an ambitious young woman to get the life she deserves after being disadvantaged from birth with so much hardship. We all wish her to grow as a person and be as successful as she can be and enjoy life. If any of the trustees rip her off, that would be a great shame. I'll stay positive and hope for the best for now. All of you guys have been amazing, well done ???? 18 4

I think seeing that ASEAN brought this appeal to us that they should follow up very closely on this story and the funds that have gone into this account. Unfortunately with the sums already quoted in just a 24 hour period that the temptation to expropriate those funds by those who have decided to take control will be too great. Indeed I think the folk at ASEAN should set up an account for the young lady and pay it to her directly as she needs it. I would continue to donate if that was the case. Under the current setup (described after donating) I am now hesitant to continue. I do hope that there is not a follow up report that someone has absconded with those funds or they have been used to pay administrative fees to those in control. Anyone helping should be do so free of charge and every baht must go to the girls education and improvement of her living conditions period! 16 1 7 1

Come on Aseannow, you helped start this, please be proactive. Can you not set up an account, or find a way to monitor the existing. I for one would continue to help if I felt sure the money was going to the young lady. 5 4

Popular Post thailand49 Posted August 26, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 26, 2022 Happily she can turn the page on this chapter in her life. Aside the concern for the money the portion about bullying will go on in a different form in her adult. Outside of the school the at large community due to lack of education and ignorance will continue to discriminate this is where the kids get it their parents. I've seen it in my life here how they are outcasted if known. The next level the University then employment especially within the government where jobs are already here situation will be near impossible. She has overcome much with very little Help I hope and wish with this money rise her about those obstacles to someday become a CEO of her own company or better yet become a leader of Thailand and break that ceiling of someone for once help the people. Congrats and continue the good work stay strong in your quest! 3

If a mother is taking anti-virals - and undetectable - it is pretty much impossible for that to happen. HIV would be caught during vaginal birth - hence hiv mothers have child cut out and children put on immediate hiv medication from birth for weeks/months after. One can only assume that the mother never had a blood test during early pregnancy - as if she did they would have found the HIV and put her immediately on anti-virals 1 2

Popular Post dallen52 Posted August 26, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 26, 2022 I'm not being cynical. Just pointing out the reality that exists in LOS. Its a PAYG country. Pay As You Go. Pay the cops. Pay immigration. DLT licences. Even teachers and education. Well known around the villages that teacher heads take payment to improve marks. Well known that low achieving students can get into university with parental help and folding stuff. I truly hope this young lady sees at least some things change from the million baht plus donations. But she has no access to it. No card. Etc. Who is going to say what's required for her development? Once trustees (odd word in Thailand 555) and administrators are set up usually administration fees start to appear. I have a daughter at Buriram university 1st year. Its hard. Financially too. I hope Buddha's looking out for her 4 1
