Do you prefer text or (TikTok) videos?

Featured Replies

Personally, I like to read news and articles.

If there is i.e. a fire or an earthquake, then pictures and videos make sense.

If it's just about this guy said this and that celebrity has a cold what's the point of videos?

It seems especially one of our members is recently very active and it seems he starts every thread with a TikTok video (in portrait format). Personally, I find this annoying. Now I know the picture of this member and if he opens a new thread then I know what to expect and avoid.

How about you? Do you like those (TikTok) video-news? Do you prefer text?

This is an open forum and we all can do what we want - within the rules. So if this user wants to do that then I guess he can.

What do you prefer?

If someone posts a video with no description I don't open, might be and probably is guff

@Black Ops Is a staff member whose role is to focus on social media. That would probably be why they post a lot of TikTok videos.

As long as there is an alternative for us who can read, it's perfectly fine

I love videos for what they are meant to.

I do not need them as alternative to TV news (news anchor reading, pictures/clips added).

Indiscriminate use of portrait format is a pest of the Apple age (following anthropocene).

Maybe evolution will adapt with eyes vertically and nose horizontal.

And a lot of them are pretty low quality content paired with clickbait titles. I tried to put him on ignore but this functionality is disabled because he is a staff member. I don't come to AseanNow to see tabloid style TikTok videos. I wasn't a fan of Facebook etc but TikTok brings it to another level. It's like the internet has a viral infection. Please don't try to drum up "engagement" with any means necessary ????

I believe the portrait aspect is because tiktok is geared to phone users more than pc and the template/format reflects that. Tiktok has over a billion users so clearly it's popular but geared more to a slightly younger audience.. I prefer to listen than read especially on the phone as eyesight aint what it was...5555 ???? more convenient.

I experience buffering every 5 seconds or so. I have yet to finish one of these Til Tok vids and it seems many others do.

Isn't Tik Tok an insidious Chinese entity whose purpose it is to undermine Western democracies and harvest personal data from users?

In China it is used to share info about worthwhile community projects and promote the "values" of the CPC. In the US it promotes scenes from spring break debauchery depicting semi-naked US college students projectile vomiting the contents of their breakfast into swimming pools after consuming copious amounts of alcohol.

That explains a lot....   Personally, it irritated the s#it out of me... opening his posts to be confronted with a video screen rather than text.

I (incorrectly) initially figure he was just too lazy to bother tying and only regurgitated vids... I didn’t know that was the specific objective of his roll on this forum.

I’d simply ignored every post he made - its clear to me, I’m only interested in the Text unless there is an event where a video is required (such as discussions of an incident where CCTV captures footage etc).

Text only for me.

Not "TIK TOK" or whatever it is or any other video or podcast.

I want to be able to read, or speed read/ignore, the content.

Tik Toks target market is 18-25 year olds; not many in that demographic on here.

Can AN not create a Kiddy Korner sub-forum to put all Tik Tok content in?

Or create an OAP's daycare centre to put all the old crusties who cannot handle change.

Tik Tok is change for the worse, IMO.

A billion users would disagree on that one ????

The over 45's amount to around 70-100 million apparently.

TikTok is carefully engineered to release small dopamine hits. It's a digital drug. Something can be widely used but still bad.

Less than 10%.

You might like the xvideos.com tik tok videos

If when opening a TikTok link you got the one relevant video I might use it.

As is you get the originators entire output of videos and have to find the one they are pushing.

No thanks

I too wanted to block black ops but can't.

I have to admit there was a time when I saw some nice TikTok videos with cosplay girls dancing.

My personal preference is that I like to read news items (text) and where appropriate, view optional supporting images/videos. I'm probably classed as an "old crusty" as I don't do Fakebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. but I do watch tik-tok and YouTube for educational and entertainment purposes.

You would not see such vids in China.

And why should I care which videos I could see in China or Timbuktu or wherever?

Tik tok makes for a mindless society. We're doomed to stupidity.

For up to date news TickTick beats hard copy???? and regular Internet news sources  by several  hours as it is often posted on the spot or shortly after it happens.   ????

I don't see being a few hours faster as an advantage. I'd rather have someone fact check and verify at least a little bit than just blasting whatever gets more emotional reaction into the ether. Can you think of a few examples where having a news faster than say on Reuters or AP gave you a real, tangible positive effect on your life?

Just look how clickbaity and divisive everything has gotten. That's the effect of a race to the bottom where content gets promoted if it's the most shocking or controversial.

The following has nothing to do with TikTok and not even the internet.

This reminds me of when I listened to the police radio when I was young.

I remember when the police talked about an accident and the closure of a main road.

And then about 1/2 hour later they reported this breaking news on the radio.

And that was about 2 minutes after the police talked on their radio that they just opened that road again. ????
