I believe its also illegal to hold someone's passport.

As far as I'm aware, the only people who can even ask to see your actual passport apart from the usual IO's, banks, government departments, travel companies etc, not individual business owners. Even police below a certain rank cannot demand to see your passport.

I remember years ago (20 or so), a group of us stayed in Kata Noi (Phuket), one of our friends had rented a motorcycle - no deposit, no licence or passport left etc, but did leave accommodation info.

  • I believe its also illegal to hold someone's passport.

  • Nobody is going to put down a 50.000 as trust is a two way street, this is also why foreigners ‘never’ give their passport for fear of it not being returned.   I’ve not mentioned anything re

Highly illegal!

No, you misunderstand, I mean the passport is retained until financial reperations are made. This is standard in Thailand.

I was thinking more along the lines of the rider being injured. A friend of mine looked into renting out scooters but decided the insurance issue made it infeasible.

Yes appears to be a running theme here and understandable. Thanks for the info.

As an individual you are not allowed to run a business. You need a proper visa, work permit and pay tax. The police might ask for it when you come with a complaint.

Of course… And all would be facilitated through a Thai friend.

The whole reason for this topic was for me to understand more from ‘Farang’ mentality rather than assuming the Thai person knows everything as it’s something I’m considering investing in.

I don’t know why people are surprised by this as it’s standard Thai practice. I don’t make the rules and facts are just that.

With a copy passport you need to work out how to get the renter to pay for any damage\loss of bike?

You need the police onside somehow

This was the main reason for my post.

It’s not up to me as it’s how the Thais conduct ‘their’ business.

A bike can never be rented without showing your passport, whether it is retained until the bike is returned or whether a copy of your passport is taken depends solely on the individual shop.

Again this can’t be disputed… as it’s factual.

Yes, a copy but you do not let them keep your actual passport.

Rented 2 motos for a week ride in Chang Mai. Photo of passport, drivers license with rental fees and daily insurance if you wanted paid up front. Asked shop for recommendations on places to stay and

all were very nice and very affordable…. It was an awesome trip to golden triangle..

3k isn’t really a large deposit though in contrast to the bike cost.
