U.S. military poised to return to Subic Bay, counter China's presence

SUBIC, Philippines - The U.S. military will likely return to Subic Bay 30 years after relinquishing what was once their largest military base in Asia due to concerns over China's increasing maritime assertiveness, a top official of the local body overseeing the free port zone said.

 

The former U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay, which faces the South China Sea, has become a bustling free port that employs about 150,000 locals, administered by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.

Manila and Washington have been in negotiations over setting up five more locations in the Asian country to build U.S. military facilities and preposition weapons under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

Surely they will require an airbase for protection needs as well? As Ukraine has proven, anti air missiles are not sufficient.

USA a few CSGs (Carrier Strike Group) in the area already, I think.  A base would simply be convenient, and prop up PI's economy, till it hits the fan again, and they are told to leave .... AGAIN.

Great news. Anything to counter the extreme arrogance and lack of grace, with which China is wearing its new found power, in the South China Sea. They are becoming despised in that region.

They have one, at Clark, in Pampanga. Never been to Angeles City? Their very own red light district.

Before Pinatubo (volcano) it was the largest US air force base outside the US. Fort Stotsenberg.

You mean because the filipinos are so enamored of the Chinese because they have claimed reefs and islands that the rest of the world recognizing as belonging to the Philippines? How do the other countries that share the South China Sea feel about China's appropriations of various reefs and island? You've got to be kidding.

Yes, it's vast, and totally underused as a civilian airport, just like U-Tapao. Both B-52 launch pads. You used to be able to fly there from Bangkok, but now it's just Korean and Japanese flights I think, and maybe Singapore. If it had a high speed rail link to Manila, it would have alleviated a lot of Nino Aquino congestion. Like U-Tapao.

The reverse has already happened.

 

A Chinese company had expressed interest in taking over Subic Bay after South Korea default on the facility $900 million loan with South Korean banks but "fierce lobbying by Washington" reportedly blocked the Chinese takeover.

 

China had signed leases with President Duerte in 2019 for three islands in the Philippines but the deal was blocked by the Navy.

Chinese media are state controlled, so they will publish any tripe the authorities tell them to. And China is not exactly very popular with their neighbors anyway, after claiming almost the entire South China Sea as Chinese territorial waters. Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and The Philippines are certainly no friends of China.

So why don't they take on just Russia even, in Ukraine? With all their NATO allies.

Considering that a large portion of population in those countries has Chinese ethnic roots (similarly as in Thailand) and these people belong to the most influential people in those countries (similarly as in Thailand), what do you think who they are more friends with?

 The USA hasn't won a significant military victory since 1945.

A total non-proxy war with either China or Russia would end in disaster.

China has 10 Million soldiers/reservist soldiers and Russia has 3 million , America has 2 Million .
