Man arrested after 18 shots fired at primary school in southern Thailand - anger over noise from school

Daily News Thai Caption: School shooter arrested

 

Police and military units were mobilized after shots were fired at a Chinese language school in downtown Ranong, southern Thailand.

 

Around 7-8 primary school children were at a flag ceremony doing some practice for a competition at the time of the shooting on Sunday.

 

They fled for cover inside school buildings and filmed where the shots were coming from. 

 

It was soon discovered that the shots came from the third floor of a nearby four story property that has an engineering supplies shop on the ground floor, reported Daily News.

Other residents of the property who were not involved in the shooting let investigators in.

 

They arrested a 43 year old man, the son of the owner of the property.

 

The school is called Ming Sin and deputy provincial governor Piyapong Chuwong said that it would open as normal today with a guard to assure parents and students. 

 

There were no reports of any injuries or deaths from the shooting. 

 

Earlier in another Daily News report the media said that the shooting was a result of annoyance caused by noise from the school over the last 2 years.

Noise pollution everywhere in Thailand, Never get used to it, as there are laws with maximum levels, but the Police nor Government nor temples and school will ever do anything to give an example and lower the noise. I am wondering what will happen fter several years as many studies already showed that the ears will be damaged by too much noise. But Thai people probably don't have this issue or have it already why they the have make such a noise. Even speaking can not be done in a normal way.It must be screaming all the time

I bet the school was going full blast day after day on their PA system.....it would not have just been the noise from a few kids that drove this guy over the edge.

it's like when i want to go for a nice relaxing walk in my local park and then they start blasting out ear piercing loud music on their PA system which ruins the whole experience. i just dont get it!

Agreed, but perhaps there were some alternative solutions he could have tried before losing off 18 shots from a firearm, presumably aimed at kids and teachers rather than just a building.

I am sick of the noise in Thailand, and can sympathize with the man being driven crazy. I live in a large house but the neighbours on one side spend hours in the garden banging, hammering and sawing every single day.About 90 % of the people around have small yappy  dogs which are always barking at the slightest thing.Not to forget a school not near but with a loudspeaker. If you want peace and quiet DO NOT RETIRE IN THAILAND.

The bikes and their exhausts... you must have heard they say guys with small P have large cars, I think the same goes for a loud bike and the rider's sphincter width.

Terrible noise pollution control measures, lack of planning, approvals and appropriate zonage of locations, lacklustre/nil enforcement of noise control, inspires a lethal mix of excessive decibel limits, unreasonably long periods of excessive noise, disrespect to neighbours, frayed tempers, mental illness, access to firearms by people with mental health problems with lack of appropriate screening (if purchased legitimately).  Add in potential corruption of officials for allowing certain businesses to operate in unsuitable areas too.  

Rinse and repeat.

I knew a hi-so Thai who lived in an inherited house in prime Sukhumvit. He was getting really annoyed with noise from condo cconstruction site next door that was working nearly 24/7.  He made many complaints to Thonglor fuzz shop but they always ignored as they were being paid of by the contractor. One night he had enough, so he screamed at them to stop at the top of his voice.  When they continued he fired several unaimed shots up at the condo.  Miraculously the noise stopped immediately and he was never disturbed by them at night any more.

 

I didn't condone his behaviour. Even being hi-so and well connected he would have had big headaches, if he had killed or injured someone on the site or one of neighbours from a falling bullet. Not to mention the workers were just poor sods tring to support their families and ordered to work OT by a greedy dirtbag contractor and project owner who didn't give a damn about workers or neighbours. Unfortunately even Thais well educated overseas believe they have a right to settle problems with gun violence. So how can the uneducated Thais be expected to behave any better.

I understand annoyance from noise. I get that. But, to fire 18 live rounds into a school? It is very fortunate nobody was hurt or killed. I hope this fool is dealt with severely. I guess he never really contemplated moving, since the building was owned by his dad, and no doubt he is a freeloader, who lives rent free.

As bad as noise pollution can be in Thailand, it pales in comparison to Vietnam with their constant honking of vehicle horns and a plethora of other obnoxious noises.

Indeed, Thais never seem happy when the immediate surrounding area is quiet.

They almost glean some kind of warmth and feeling of safety when there is a load of noise

Noise from kids at a school and from temples is your definition of "noise pollution"?  Do you know whose country and culture this is? Do you think you have the right to dictate to the Thai people how they should run their lives? And your suggestion that "noise pollution" from schools is enough to damage ears is the most ludicrous thing I've seen on the web since Trump's last public meltdown. What "studies" do you refer to? Name them.  Since you want to play expert, how many decibels is considered harmful, what KINDS of sounds NAMED IN YOUR "STUDIES"  and under what circumstances such as duration of sound from a few seconds to daily exposure? It sounds to me like the solution to YOUR problem is either move to a quieter place or get some earplugs.

How do you know? Do you KNOW that the guy wasn't a psycho on the edge of cracking before he did this? Such people can snap at the smallest imagined provocation. We've seen them in the news, and you no doubt have seen that news. You sure don't know much about human nature to be spouting such uninformed opinions and judgments

I have been here 10 years, living in Makkasan, Bangkok, as well as any place I want to travel to temporarily. First of all I knew this was a city before I came here. I have spent lots of time in some of the biggest US cities from New York to LA. City noise comes with the territory. But even in suburbs of the US how have guys mowing lawns and using chainsaws in the early mornings on the weekends, and barking dogs are not unique to Thailand. On the other hand if I want peace and quiet I don't have any trouble finding it. I have a guy like you in my apartment building in Makkasan, from the UK and Australia both, who complained about the sirens of ambulances, as if people should be denied emergency medical care just to suit him. Did you know nothing of the country before you moved here? Did you know nothing of the neighborhood you chose before you moved in?  Whose fault is that? I spent time getting to know each and every neighborhood under consideration before I finally moved to where I am. I knew EXACTLY what I was to find before I made the commitment. You're telling people not to "retire" in Thailand because you yourself are having problems adjusting to the inherent ways of the Thai people? Sounds more like the problem is YOU, and YOUR inability to adapt. I shouldn't have to say this, but it's not your country. You're free to move somewhere else if you don't like your neighbors, but you have no right or moral authority to impose YOUR value judgments on them or anyone else, so stop whining and either do something about it, or zip it. Or buy some earplugs. Nobody likes a complainer, and it seems like they all like to pile on as if they don't have the option to leave. Is whining and complaining a national sport in the UK or something?

We aliens like to have quiet because it helps us relax, and sometimes contemplate the meaning of life (even if we never find the answer). It gives us the opportunity to think. Thais do not like to think because it can be complicated. They are also selfish and don't care what affect their noise has on anyone around them. It's a cultural thing. Me First again.

By the way, the meaning of life is 1 - to find a way to do less work for more money and 2 - find clothes to wear that never need ironing. I've accomplished both so can live happy ever after ????

Yes my wife thinks she is talking normally but she shouts a lot. Because she has been deafened over the years with all the speakers in the village. When I ask what the monks are talking about she hasn't got a clue. This is one of the reasons I have to get out of the village.
