Lucky Licence Plate Auction Winner Being Probed For Money Laundering

THE COMPANY that won a lucky vehicle licence plate number at an auction on Saturday with record-breaking 45.09 million baht bid now faces investigation for money laundering, TV Channel 7 said this afternoon (Dec. 12).

 

Pol. Lt. Gen. Santi Chainiramai, chief of Technology Crime Suppression Division, said it was the well-known Facebook page “Sai Mai Tong Rod” that cast suspicion about the bid winner, questioning whether the owner of a gambling website had turned to collecting licence plates instead.

 

He revealed that Mr. Tanthai Narongkul, who represented Titan Capital Group Holding that won the bid for “9 Kor Kor 9999” licence plate at the auction, had previously faced charges over online gambling and money laundering.

It seems even the criminals here are promoted based on nepotism and connections, rather than brains.

If people can and are willing to pay so much money for a license plate, I think something is very wrong. While other people have to struggle to make ends meet every month,  a daily minimum wage of not even 350 THB a day, it is just shameful to show off with so much money for a license plate...  It doesn't care were the money is coming from, it is just shameful that there are such rich people that they can afford it

It simply is disgusting to pay such an amount for a license plate , if so much better things could have been done with that money ...

This isn't a story about number plates, its an advertisement for laundry detergent.

Expect to see the guy on TV, pointing at a box of FAB, with a caption "its the brand I use"

In the real world people invest millions in art. In Thailand they spend money on 'lucky' numberplates. If I had that kind of money, I think I'd rather use it to look at paintings rather than a car numberplate, but each to their own I suppose.

 

BTW, I've always been told that all Thais are poor and that justifies double - or in the case of government rip-offs - 10 times pricing.

It's the same with 2nd hand amulets which can be very expensive; the buyers never question the fact that all the previous owners are dead.

Money laundering would explain why he paid so much for a number plate when the world will be in a recession in 2023 for goodness knows how long. When China invades Taiwan the recession will be mightily long, so his investment will be wasted.

I'd spend it on what I hung a plate on... the bit in the middle counts not what's lucky on either end.

That 45.09 million baht paid for a couple of pieces of metal plate are the equivalent of 180,360 days or494 years of work at 350 baht per day on a 7 day week.

I really do not understand why people complain about amount of money spent do you not realise this money is going to be spent on road safety. I believe government has already ordered 15 ornamental lamp posts for nana with tourists in mind also so no more complaints that you didn't know she was a he

What?  Nonsense, that is not a fact.  The previous owners of all 2nd hand amulets for sale are dead?  How could you ever know that?  You don't know that they are traded by collectors and investors?
