India to Require Negative Covid Test from Thai Visitors

BANGKOK (NNT) - Beginning January 1, Thai tourists visiting India will be required to produce a negative Covid-19 test result.

 

According to Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s health minister, this is being done in light of the evolving Covid-19 situation around the world, particularly in certain countries.

 

The test is required to be completed and uploaded to the government’s Air Suvidha website within 72 hours of travel to India. 

 

Mandaviya stated that the new Covid test requirement would be in addition to the random tests currently performed on 2% of all international passengers arriving in India.

 

India has also joined the United States, Japan, Italy, and Taiwan in requiring Covid tests among visitors from China, following the lifting of Beijing’s strict "zero-Covid" rules.

 

Top European Union health officials convened a meeting on Thursday (Dec 29) to coordinate plans to respond to China’s decision to lift its “Zero-Covid” policy amid a new wave of infections in the country.

Are Thai government health officials going to react to this nonsense?

Now the pressure gets ratcheted up another notch.  Stand by as this one spins Anutin in circles.  Anutin has already stated that he is not worried about the Chinese coming as they have to be PCR tested negative before leaving Thailand.......something is getting really stinky with China just all of a sudden lifting restrictions an allowing full blown outbound travel for the Chinese New Year.

Many Thai citizens are of Indian ethnic origin. Many other nationalities fly from Bangkok to India.

Reciprocity is required here, all Indians must be subject to testing prior to boarding any flights to Thailand.

 

Also make it a type of test which is particularly expensive and require that all original paperwork is presented both in Indian and then separately translated into Thai and notarised at the Embassy - all within 24 hours of the flight ????

 

The Chinese are coming back now, there's more important things to consider.

What medical imperative would drive that policy? This is all about the possibility of large numbers of arrivals from China causing widespread infections in Thailand. There's no current reciprocity issue there.

The last one they created worked quite well but did not achieve the desired ends... so they are trying out a new one on the world!

One of wifeys friends recently went on a Buddhist pilgrimage group tour to India for a couple of weeks. On return several of the group were sick and tested positive for covid so maybe India needs to put it's own house in order first.

The usual China bashing. The Indians announced the mandatory PCR tests on December 24th, before the Chinese announced the reopening after 8th January.
