Buriram: Many victims bitten by "mad" Thai street dog "foaming at the mouth" - rabies fears

Authorities at Buriram Hospital yesterday contacted Daily News after school students, uni students and members of the public came in to report being bitten by a street dog.

 

They had bite wounds to their legs and stomach areas saying they had been indiscriminately bitten by a stray animal.

 

More than ten people wanted anti-rabies shots.

 

One of the people bitten was a uni student called Banyawat, 21. He said he was just going to a convenience store when he heard a commotion.

 

Suddenly a dog ran foward and bit him without warning.

 

Sri, 56, said he was taking a relative for kidney dialysis and was going into the store when he saw a man with a stick.

Then the dog darted for him and wouldn't leg go its grip. He described how he used his fist to punch the dog to get it off.

 

Apiwat, 41, who has a yam salad stall in the area in front of Mini Big C said that from what he saw many people were bitten including a younger relative of his.

 

He called it a "sunak baa" - a mad dog.

 

This harks to the common name for rabies in Thailand "loke maa baa" or "loke sunak baa". Mad dog disease.

 

He said that the dog in question was foaming at the mouth and going for anyone in range indiscriminately.

A sure sign it was rabid, in his opinion.

 

In latest related news vets and the local authority had shot the animal with a traquilizer dart.

 

It was being inspected for rabies as the authorities prepared to vaccinate anyone who may have had contact with the animal.

It is very sad indeed to see these filthy diseased animals rooming the streets of Thailand. As much as Thailand tries to put on lipstick, it is still a third world country that is dangerous at times.

Shot it with a tranquillising dart, so it's still alive with rabies then ???? No problem killing millions of cows, pigs chickens and fish a year, but a rabid dog is sacred!

As its bitten people it should be put down anyway, foaming at the mouth and attacking anything that moved is almost certainly rabies.

Years ago the soi dogs were culled but the western do gooders put a stop  to it.

How did westerners stop that? In most,dangerous dogs attacking people are euthanised immediately. It's Thai culture behind allowing strays and diseased dogs free rein.

It's not gnarly. Post exposure rabies vaccine protocol specifies one injection in your arm every two weeks for a total of four. You should also receive human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) immediately to provide antibodies that will protect you until you begin to generate your own antibodies from the vaccine. HRIG is injected into and around the bite site and is not particularly painful.

 

I know. I've been there and thankfully lived.

 

One thing my physician told me - an older gentleman who had done his residency in rural Isaan decades ago when there was more rabies:  go to a sink, put your watch next to it and commence washing the wound with soap and water for a full 20 minutes. He said 20 minutes will seem like a long time and it is, but that alone can be be >95% efficacious in washing the virus out and preventing infection, unless it is a deep puncture wound. 

 

And then go get HRIG and vaccines.

Once bitten by soi dogs myself, I get furious each time I read news like this.

Thailands law to protect street animals, and animal cruelty has gone too far.

 

Children get bitten and severely attacked, tourists in the 1000s get bitten yearly.

In popular tourist resort Pattaya, number of street dogs is out of control.

 

Thailand is eager to leave 'thirld world status', but can't even control and remove street dogs around the country, not even in popular tourist cities.

 

But, it makes a nice extra earner for the many hospitals around the country who charge 2-5000 for shots.

Many Westerners support organizations like Soi Dog Foundation that relocate these filthy vermin to Wats and other holding pens later to be released onto the streets again.

I have helped and rescued over three hundred dogs and not once been bitten. Dogs don't bite without a reason.
