Brits rally round to donate 3 million baht for compatriot who fell off Koh Phangan hotel balcony and was "left helpless for 40 minutes"

An online appeal to help with the medical costs and repatriation of a Coventry lady who severely injured herself in a fall from a Koh Phangan hotel balcony has raised 76,754 pounds or just over 3 million baht.

 

Earlier the story about 21 year old Maddi Neale-Shankster hit the news in the UK.

 

An appeal by Karen Mosley Neale has now been closed as it had reached its target and the family were "eternally grateful".

 

Earlier it had been posted that Maddi fell 60 feet and may never walk again.

 

It was claimed that she was "left on the floor helpless for 40 minutes until an ambulance finally arrived".

 

The family were dismayed to discover that she did not have travel insurance for repatriation.

 

They said it was par for the course for a 21 year old not to read the small print on her "dream holiday".

 

The family earlier said they needed 100,000 UK pounds but now the appeal has been closed with the target having been reached.

Indeed, moving someone in such circumstances would not be wise.

The ambulance arrival time is probably quicker than the UK at the moment….

When soliciting money from strangers, best not to lie, as affects one credibility.

 

Then it questions other statements ... was she seriously injured ?

 

I had a motorcycle accident, hit the house so hard, I got knocked out & broke my wrist.   Very serious ... and yet, I didn't even bother to see a doc.

 

Next day, wrist a little stiff and swollen a bit, so friend suggested an X-ray.  OK, it is 'broken' and you need a cast on it, so says the doc.   "yo doc, it ain't that broke, as I can still move it"

 

Wrapped with ace bandage and I left.  Wrap came off a day later.  Serious is all a bit relative.

Might never walk again??? Can we get a follow up to this GFM story in 3 months?  

I recall 2 American girls partying in the Maldives after getting a large sum on GFM  for some accident / illness in Thailand a few years ago.

Everything is a grift these days.

I’ve often thought that  flights from UK should show instructional videos regarding the use of balconies and elevators/lifts. Both seem to defeat so many of the visitors from Britain in particular.

And I was taught that a fall from above SIX feet should be handled as a potentially fractured spine.

Reading the small print seems another British deficiency. May have to do something with low literacy skills in UK.

If its the second floor ie the top floor then I think it is definitely close to 60ft or 20m. Plus so many nasty comments on here and the bottom line is no one is forced to donate. Comments about her appearance OMG! She is a very bonny girl and not many posters on here could have been that lucky in their youth...

There are some really nice expats in Thailand.

And there are some expats in Thailand in who cannot think, have knowledge.

But think they know everything and are down right insulting.

 Makes me wonder what Thai people think when they read some of these posts.

A sad story with likely life changing injuries. Glad to see she's now got the financial help required. I read the story but could see nothing about why she was not insured. Did she have an insurance policy or not? Only that she "didn't have insurance for repatriation". All of the travel insurance I've ever used over the last 30 years has had repatriation as cover. It also said she did "not to read the small print on her "dream holiday".". Or maybe the insurer refused cover because of the small print? Here's some small print from a travel policy I just took out. As it was New Year's Eve, maybe the insurer used the Alcohol exclusion to deny cover? Who knows, but it serves as a warning for all of us who like a drink when travelling. No mention of what quantity "too much alcohol" is.

I think it helped that this story was reported in the newspapers and actually on BBC news.  Also helps that the victim was an attractive young lady.  Can't imagine the same concern if it was some drunken fat bald bloke!

Or add the travel insurance as part of the ticket price.

 

Airlines have much bigger clout in reducing rates for bulk buying of policies, it should be very affordable IMO.
