French Motorbike Rider Charged with Hit and Run After Thai Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Patong

Patong – A French motorbike rider has been charged with hit and run after a Thai pedestrian sustained serious injuries in Patong.

The Patong Police told the Phuket Express today (February 16th) that last week on February 10th Mrs. Maliwan Sarnrat, 54, was crossing a small road in Soi Sai Namyen in Patong. She sustained severe injuries after she was hit by a motorbike. The rider did not stop.

 

Patong Police told the Phuket Express that on February 14th the rider returned the motorbike in question to a motorbike rental shop on Pracha Nukroa Road in Patong. The rider was identified as Mr. NAJI SAMI BOUAKKAZ, a French national.

This was inevitable and I'm surprised that it's not a common occurence on the narrow streets of Patong. It's great that the authorites have tracked the guy down and let's hope that the punishment fits the crime to act as a deterrent to others.

She looked and the a-hole was driving at least twice the speed of other motorists.

This a$$h*** was riding way too fast for prevailing road conditions - built up area, pedestrians, blind spots, congested street.  To take off after striking the lady is cowardice and typical selfishness that prevails here in LOS. Why ride this fast in a built up zone?  Showing off? Self perceived bravado? Trying to intimidate and scare others with aggressive riding?  What was the rush? I bet there was no legitimate reason.  Just sheer stupidity as normal. 

 

The fault of the pedestrian is that she did not take more due care to cross, taking into account the fact there are dangerous drivers/riders in this country. If a bike is speeding, accelerating up a street, don't think these idiots will slow down to the speed limit or less.  You may be the one in the right,  but that doesn't help when you are crippled or dead.

Possibly drunk.  Would explain the excessive speed, poor judgement in deciding not to stop and an attempt to avoid a drunk driving charge (among other charges).

The name seems to be of Algerian origin wherein 85% are Arab. Being a French citizen doesn't mean the name is necessarily French. Until 1962 all Algerians were considered to be French citizens, albeit different Kegan status from fully French citizens.

Name can be found to minor extent also in Poland and Morocco.

It's not of course, but the poster you quoted didn't question nationality, ie Citizenship., He was making an educated guess as to the Frenchman's origins.

Silly question. Impossible to state an exact speed from the video. However, it was excessively fast for the conditions and almost certainly above legal limits. The girl did look first and tried to run to safety, but the person on the bike was going way too fast for her to escape. The rider made no attempt to swerve and only briefly braked about a meter before hitting the girl. He then immediately sped up to flee the scene.

This Frenchman, of North African origin, should spend considerable time in a prison cell to contemplate his actions.

Over the years there have been far too many incidents of this nature in Phuket, specifically Patong and Kamala, with the common themes of gangs of French citizens with Arab names, big bikes, speed in busy streets and disregard for others. The Police need to get serious about their activities.

I agree, however in this case we're dealing with a French Arab. They behave that way in France too, only the difference is that the police don't go near them there.

These guys think Phuket is a tropical extension of France, as unfortunately hip hop personalities such as Seth Gecko (and movies such as Paradise Beach) have heavily promoted this.

As you undoubtedly know, it's very hard to ascertain the speed at which he was travelling, but having been a road user for 60 years, I would hazard a guess at around 70 to 80 km/h.

Because it was a Thai pedestrian, the Arab will have to take into account that he will receive a hefty punishment in contrast if it had been a white victim.

But there's nothing wrong with that.

He shouldn't have left the scene, but first thing the fuzz need to do is calculate his speed. Should be fairly easy with the right equipment, they have a video, speed = distance / time, they could measure the distance, analyse the video with respect to time. Not that I'm trying to justify what happened after he hit her but I would almost guarantee that if it was a Thai rider and the speed was calculated to be within limits for that road the only case would be the hit and run. For a Thai - 500 baht and a wai
