I have a thai driving license but no UK license can I drive in the UK on my thai license and if so for how long  and would it be each time I return

you should take an IDL in Thailand I guess

If you have a 5 year licence yes (no need for an IDP).

12 months and yes, each visit.

That's not correct, if you are going to be a UK resident for more than a year then you are expected to change the forieng driving license to a UK one. 

Have you Ever held a UK license? if so you could re-new it while in the UK.

From his OP I think it’s reasonable to assume that as a UK citizen he spends the 8-9 months per year in which he isn’t in Thailand in the UK and he was probably always a UK resident.
