Finland has begun constructing a 200km (124 mile) fence on its border with Russia to boost security.

The Border Guard said it will be 3m (10ft) tall with barbed wire on top.

Finland shares the longest European Union border with Russia, at 1,340km (832 miles). At present, Finland's borders are secured primarily by light wooden fences.

Finland decided to build the fence due to a rise in Russians seeking to escape conscription to fight in Ukraine.

The Nordic country also moved closer to joining the Nato alliance on Tuesday. Its parliament started debating a bill to speed up the country's bid, with a vote expected on Wednesday.

Work on the fence at the Imatra border crossing started on Tuesday with forest clearance, while road construction and fence installation are planned to start in March.

Good for you Finland and I’m sure that if push comes to shove they will back up their border with more than just a fence as the Russians have found out in the past 

It's a well known fact that building a wall/fence doesn't work and is not needed. Or do they work? Which is it?

No it won’t work to keep determend people out but it would serve as a line of demarcation and as a tripwire for defense if needed

Noone with two brain cells to rub together expects this thing to keep anyone out. It's a clear demarcation and it'll undoubtedly be alarm rigged.

 

Mainly so the Neo-soviets know where they shouldn't even stick a toecap over.

The OP didn't say it was a military installation, it said that it was to stop Russians crossing into Finland.

Having no disputed borders is a pre-requisites to join NATO, installing a demarcation fence along the border is almost certainly a statement to meet this NATO membership requirement.

Good point.

Anyway, just because the FInns built it, that doesn't make it a good idea. If conditions in Russia grow desperate enough, and no other exits are available, I'd guess that fence won't do much good.

I think you will find the fence is there to stop Russian pedestrians wondering around, as well as pointing out the borderline........

Finland is in Scandinavia, their stance is more relevant to Scandinavia.

 

The border wall is good only to prevent "accidental crawlers" to cross the border. for example those africans into european countries or those  crossing Venezuela into Mexico into "Breaking Bad" country. Also there's border (huge and ugly) in Israel built by Bibi for no reason but to shave some $$$ from the budget. 

There are no military purposes of such walls. Even those metal rods of Trump's wall will fall after mere 120 mm.
Or maybe kerosene will melt them 9/11 style? worked just fine there )

More than 200,000 Russians have fled to Finland, I'm sure there were plenty of accidental crawlers among them that would have been stopped

What do you mean by "proto-humans"? Who are you quoting? The "proto" in this context would mean "primitive". Do you believe that?

Well better than the present light wooded fence. Its a matter of deterrent and providing a clear boundary rather than a relative simple hop over.

Well, since the fence hasn't been described in detail, at least so far as I know, maybe it will take more than a pair of wire or bolt cutters to deal with it. If not, I believe those technological marvels are available in Russia.

That certainly does look more formidable than a simple fence but as the US experience shows, not enough to deter desperate people if that's the only escape route available.
