Bungee jump given clean bill of health after Hong Kong tourist "damaged Thai tourism" by going to foreign media

Naew Na Thai Caption: Bungee jump inspected after tourist complained to foreign media

 

Naew Na reported that the Hong Kong tourist who went to the media in his homeland after a bungee cord broke in Pattaya had damaged Thai tourism.

 

The accident occurred on February 24th but has only just come to light.

 

Yesterday representatives from the Chonburi tourism office, civil engineers and the Pattaya tourist police finally went to investigate.

They checked two licences to operate that were all in order.

 

They were told that there were two tourists. The first had jumped safely but the second one's cord snapped 2-3 meters above the water.

 

He surfaced immediately and was helped by staff who entered the water. He was taken to hospital and given the all clear with doctors saying he was uninjured.

He was paid 12,500 baht - a payment of 10,000 baht to cover medical expenses and basic compensation plus the return of his bungee jump fee.

 

They checked up on him at his hotel but he was out shopping.

 

A guide acting on his behalf demanded 200,000 baht and was told that the park would not be paying anything more.

 

The guide threatened going to the media back in Hong Kong, a threat that he followed up on.

The authorities checked everything and decided that the operation was all up to standard.

 

It was decided that the cord had broken perhaps due to wear that could not be ascertained with the naked eye.

 

The facility was told to have daily inspections and replace any equipment that was too old.

 

It was further noted that the park in question had never had an accident before.

 

No further action was taken.

Pesky foreigners making to look Thailand bad,yes that is one way of looking at it.

What is the problem?Nobody died yet and we have a "safety first" sticker

somewhere.

I just wonder if there are any government set guidelines and not just a few cowboys just winging it.

"Too old equipment should be replaced",yes but what is too old?

If they wanted to protect Thai tourism, even just for show, they should have at very least suspended their licencing and closed them down. You know show they actually care about tourists...  No doubt hands got greased on the inspection

This forum may qualify as one of those pesky "foreign media" outlets that makes Thailand look bad by reporting the news.

Many times I've brought up some item I read about here, but it's just silence from Thai media.

Bottom line might be "no foreign coverage" (which we can't control) and assumed no Thai coverage (we can threaten into submission).

Well there is Thai news all over the foreign media,the guy who shot and killed four people,the guy whose gas pedal got stuck?The loss of the Radio active chemical and this one also.

The tourist did nothing to harm Thai tourism. His revelations about the lack of maintenance is what hurt tourism. Let's get our facts straight, and be man enough to stop deflecting blame.

Frakking hilarious, you can't ascertain anything with the naked eye. These cords are given for a given number of jumps, and age even when unused. The environment (temperature mostly) will also impact the ageing. So when your gear is given for two years  or 500 jumps [for instance] you just throw it away  once you've past either of these limits. Very un Thai I must admit...

It is called victim culture, and is the polar opposite of the generations of the past. An advocate of wimp culture may called it repressed behavior, but these heros came back from the horrific experiences of WWII, and barely ever uttered a complaint. They just got on with their lives. There is a huge gap between a hero and a wimp.

Thai TV news is for in-depth coverage of some guys Missus giving him a slap for having a mistress.  It's not for depressing news about tourists having sccidents or anything trivial like wars or earthquakes.
