He could have done his two years a long time ago and it would have been over.
Really - how many politicians have served time here in Thailand.  It's almost a rite of passage.

In Thailand you are guilty until you prove your innocence. The fact that a military junta held a coup implies he would never have been allowed to prove anything and in fact risked military interference in the trial (as they have shown over time they are willing to do). If he is still working to do the time maybe under house arrest, good. The fact that he has been able to visit many countries (Japan for instance) without arrest implicitly implies they have doubts.

What a crock of ****. I too was here in 2014, in fact, 2004 - now. I came here while Taksin was PM. Of course he was corrupt - but the common THAI people loved him. The military took that away. you obviously don't live here anymore so why is it important to you that the military run the country? This country needs change - democratically, not by stealth, guns and Generals.

Not only was the economy in far better shape but Thaksin was voted into power by a free election vote by the people. After 4 years as PM, he stood for election once again and was voted back with an overall majority.

 

He was deposed in the time honoured manner by yet another military coup, as was his sister, Yingluck.

If the PTP win an overall majority they can simply tear up the constitution and revert to the 1997 constitution, modify and amend it where it is needed.

I came to live in Thailand during the last couple of years of Thaksins premiership, so am not really qualified to comment much on him, but there is one thing here. I have seen how bad the country has been with an unelected soldier as PM, I have seen all the lies and incompetence from him.

When I first came to Thailand I saw all the happiness of many farangs and was recommended by them all to come and live here.

If Thaksin was really deserving of getting a jail sentence that forced him to leave the country, where must that leave the present unelected PM?

From my own experience, am I expected to believe that Thaksin should be in jail and this unelected PM should not?

I completely agree with your post Bill. but your last paragraph, was it not the PM after Yingluck who was deposed by Prayut and his soldiers?

Yingluck was the last freely elected PM in Thailand. She dissolved her government to make way for another election and became the caretaker PM.
