Two kindhearted siblings who gave a lift to a hitchhiker yesterday in the Isaan province of Udon Thani saw their trust backfire when he stole their car.

The victim, a 29 year old woman named Khanittha, reported the incident at Mueang Udon Thani Police Station after her black Honda BR-V SUS was stolen by the unnamed hitchhiker.

Khanittha explained that she and her 36 year old brother, Apiwat, had travelled from Bangkok to Udon Thani to visit friends. However, upon arrival, they found their friends were not at home. They then decided to visit a nearby shopping mall before heading back home.

While Apiwat was parking the car, a man between 30 and 35 years old approached them and asked for a ride to Bangkok. The man claimed his home was in the Krathum Ban district of Bangkok. According to Khanittha, the man appeared to be trustworthy and well-mannered, and they saw him wearing a gold necklace, which further reinforced their trust in him. They did not inquire why he did not have any belongings or a backpack.

They wanted the visit to be a surprise and it was a nice day for a drive?

They apparently did...so what?  What's that got to do with the theft?

Very sad.  With crime apparently on the rise, it seems inevitable that, even with the anti-foreigner campaign in full swing, Thai people are going to end up trusting each other less at some point (or getting ripped off more).

I wonder what Thailand would be like if things changed from "Thai people are all good people" to "you cannot trust Thais".  It would be a monumental societal shift.

What an abstract motion... If what "things changed" from  "Thai people are all good people", exactly? Who made this thing about all Thais being good people? And who's responsible for getting the thing changed?

There's plenty on this forum who already believe that "you cannot trust Thais" anyway...

The truth is, of course, somewhere down the middle. Just like in pretty much every aspect of life, and in every country across the world.

You don't know that Thai people generally consider other Thais to be honest and trustworthy?  Have you spent much time in Thailand?

The things that might change would be the attitudes of Thai people.  That's fairly self-explanatory, as I was discussing Thai people and society in Thailand.

Lived and worked here since 2008, I politely disagree. They know they cant trust another Thai as far as they can throw them.  They're just better than us at getting into predicaments.

Most people generally trust their compatriots; that's human nature.

I agree, there would be huge shifts in society if that norm was to be broken, in any country.

Good luck in your quest.

And then agreed to give the man a lift back to Bangkok before seeing their friends?
