Wiggy
So, if you’re speeding, texting, phoning, drunk, or otherwise incapacitated and you lose control of your vehicle you’ll miss the tree because there’s an oil drum next to it? ???? Idiocy.

The object was to lower the number of collisions with trees and the solution of putting oil drums around the trees will certainly do that simply because the collisions will be with oil drums not trees. So yes you'll miss the tree and hit the drum.
sqwakvfr
So the first impact will be the oil drum? It is painted like a target. A better idea might be plastic barrels filled with water. Never mind the barrel and the water will be stolen.

Paul Henry
I trust they will regularly breath test the trees to make sure they don't jump out infront of a vehicle.

First, who said the drums were going to be empty? Second, the objective is protection for the tree not from the tree. The tree is a totally passive participant in this. 1
