webfact Posted May 22, 2023 Posted May 22, 2023 PHOTO: Bangkok Biz By Peter Roche Concerned residents in Chiang Mai are urging officials to fix a huge crack in the city’s ancient Suan Dok Gate before it collapses. Residents say that if restoration work doesn’t happen soon, there is a chance the wall of the structure could collapse. Nation Thailand reports that Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Pongsitthithavorn has ordered relevant agencies to work together on repairing the structure. The Muang Chiang Mai Municipality has been tasked with working with the Fine Arts Office to restore the ancient site and prevent the wall from toppling. The north side of the Suan Dok Gate currently has a crack 2 metres long, which is so wide people can see right through to the other side. According to the report, the Fine Arts Office already has a restoration plan in place but residents are now calling for this to be accelerated, due to concerns that the wall could collapse onto an adjacent road running alongside the gate. https://phuket-go.com/phuket-news/national-news/calls-for-massive-crack-in-ancient-chiang-mai-wall-to-avoid-collapse/ -- © Copyright Phuket GO 2023-05-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Popular Post arithai12 Posted May 22, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 22, 2023 "ancient" is not quite correct. The original gates along the moat were erected in the 13th century, but are long gone. The present ones are replicas built, if memory serves me right, about a century ago, I could be wrong but certainly not "ancient". I suspect that the reaason for the degradation is the volume of traffic on the adjacent road, not foreseen of course a century ago. Anyway, the gates do serve a historical and patriotic purpose, not to mention the selfies attraction, so let's hope they manage to do something before it collapses like the one at Chang Pueak. 3 2
1happykamper Posted May 22, 2023 Posted May 22, 2023 Rubbish work was obviously done when that wall was rebuilt just 70 years ago. 1 1

Yeah, they should have been way more concerned about properly engineering the rebuild. Not like there was anything else going on at the time... ????
bwanajohn Posted May 22, 2023 Posted May 22, 2023 Most of the walls have been built or rebuilt in the last 40 years/ Thaphae gate and square wall was rebuilt less than 20 years ago and Chang puek area not too long before that, I don't remember when Suan dok was done but if not during the last 40 years not too loo long before. 1
