Russia: Wagner mutiny shows real cracks in Putin authority - US

An attempted armed mutiny in Russia shows "real cracks" in President Vladimir Putin's authority, America's top diplomat Antony Blinken has said.

He told US media that the rebellion by Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner fighters was a "direct challenge" to Mr Putin, forcing him into an amnesty agreement.

The deal halted Wagner's march on Moscow on Saturday. The mercenaries had earlier seized two Russian cities.

Mr Putin accused the group of treason, but all charges were later dropped.

Under the deal, Wagner fighters must return to their field bases and Prigozhin move to Russia's western neighbour Belarus, whose leader Alexander Lukashenko was involved in the negotiations.

The current whereabouts of Prigozhin, a former Putin loyalist, are unknown. He was last seen in public leaving Rostov-on-Don - one of the two southern cities where his fighters had taken control of military facilities.

Prigozhin's press service said he would answer questions from the media "when he has normal communication means", Russia's RTVI news website reported on Sunday afternoon. It provided no further details

Prigozhin over played his hand, that about the extent of the story.

He's been a thorn in the side of the Russian Ministry of Defense for months with his public statements and outbursts.  The MoD had already made moves to renew the Wagner forces contracts with the MOD and not the Wagner PMC group.  Prigozhin knew his fame and fortune were coming to an end and thought he'd have his way.

Lucky for him that his fate is living in exile and not rotting in a prison.

I think his fate is to be poisoned in Belarus.

Or fall from a high window. Not hard to predict that a natural death is unlikely to be in his future.

There was a news article today with a CIA person saying the whole thing was staged by Putin to give him more power.

Actually it was an ex-CIA analyst, Rebekka Koffler, who now works for Fox. And that really makes no sense. Does she think that Putin wanted to look weak? It wasn't just Prigozhin who backed down but Putin, too.

I think a far better explanation advance by Phillips O'Brien is that Prigozhin just wanted to put pressure on Putin but was shocked to find how weak the resistance to his advance on Moscow was. Once he saw that he might actually succeed, an eventuality for which he wasn't prepared, he decided that the best course for him and Russia was just to leave.

This was a disaster for little Vlad. He emerged from this looking very weak and very scared. He is a small minded man, without a plan. He is in way over his head with Ukraine. This is only the beginning. May he suffer like the women and children he is so fond of slaughtering. May his reign of terror and may his gangland crime wave within Russia end soon.

Absolutely not. That is a simple minded as saying the Rock/Smith event was staged by Smith. It nearly ruined his career. The same might be said of Putin, a few years from now. He just might be nearing the end of his days in power. The extent to which he has botched the war in Ukraine is stuff for the history books.

The mutiny also shows real cracks in Putin's future Russia, which must be evident to Putin a self-professed authority on Russia's past glory and history.

'Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it' Georg Santayana 1863-1952.

Today, I watched an interview with an interesting perspective about how today's conditions in Russia are now similar to those that predicated the past two major regime changes in their modern history, particularly the Russian Revolution and the demise of the USSR.

The similarities were Russia's failed wars, WW1 and the Russo-Afghanistan War, the population suffering the wartime economic pain and loss of life, systemic corruption, all due to oppressive autocratic leadership.

And the mutinies that eventually led to these events.

that's interesting, cause the warlord looks like he has some interesting opportunities in Belarus. their PM has been deathly ill the last couple visits to Moscow, and Belarus has been acting as a defacto Russian state. I wonder if the warlord will find himself as the new authoritarian of Belarus in the near future...
