Passenger sustains serious injury on escalator at Don Mueang airport

A female passenger was seriously injured when one of her legs became trapped in an escalator at Don Mueang airport this morning (Thursday).

 

According to the airport administration, the accident took place at about 8.40am on the south escalator, linking Pier 4 and Pear 5 of the domestic terminal, as the victim was on her way to board a plane bound for Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

 

After the accident, the victim was rushed to Bhumibol Hospital and the escalator was temporarily closed for examination by mechanics.

From another source "An informed source, however, said that the escalator collapsed as the victim was standing on it and one of her legs sustained deep lacerations."

The problem is there are no risk assessments performed, or if they are done, are not done properly or done by people that are not competent. 

 

Health and safety is not a concern here. Seen as a hindrance to profit by greedy bosses.

From the photos, it looks to me like the case wheels got jammed in between the moving section of the travellator and the guard, and she's followed it in with her foot.

Agree totally at my local bigc the floor plates at the bottom level of both travelators have been trashed by the "trains "of shopping carts being returned by staff from the carpark and the loaded carts coming down to the carpark. 

I never step on the centre of these always near the edges where there is support.

Absolutely a malfunction and likely negligence.

I could not quite get it from the Thairath article but they compare to some "China" case where a person was even killed. Falling into some collapsing "floor plate".

Well, the family of the student that was in that recent fire extinguisher incident received less than $7k USD for his death so I think the loss of a leg would get you around $1k USD.

During 1955/56 I was installing escalators in Melbourne Australia in preparation for the Olympic games.

These were cast iron monsters couldn't break them with a sledge hammer.

No accidents reported for very many years,then the toddlers sneakers came on the market,they featured nonslip soles.

At that time escalators had linished stainless steel skirting but when kids approached the bottom with shoe against skirting and steps levelling the shoe and foot got caught with mostly bad results.

First came yellow marked danger zones on every step,followed by Teflon coated skirting and micro switches behind the skirting and under the floor plates, Then a new step design was introduced where the 3 treads nearest the skirting were increased in height this made standing on them uncomfortable these moves had made them very safe.

But now the accountants are in control of safety everything is light weight and  "maintenance free"

On Thursday afternoon, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha expressed deep concern and ordered an urgent report on a shocking incident at Don Mueang Airport. It occurred at 8.27 am and saw the left leg of a 57-year-old Terminal Two passenger travelling to Nakhon Si Thammarat province engorged by a faulty walkway escalator, causing it to be severed at the knee and prompting an emergency response at Thailand’s second busiest airport.

Thailand’s second busiest airport was the kingdom’s main airport until 2006. Thursday’s freak accident followed another freak event with an escalator in 2019 when a visitor to the airport lost a rubber shoe to a malfunctioning moving stair. Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha has ordered an urgent report into exactly what happened and expressed his deep concern.

The Thai PM and top officials on Thursday reacted quickly after a nightmarish incident unfolded at the country’s second busiest airport when a 57-year-old woman had her leg cut off below the knee by a walkway escalator at 8.27 am in the morning as she made her way towards a domestic flight heading for Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

 

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha has asked for an immediate report on a shocking incident on Thursday morning at Don Mueang International Airport in which a 57-year-old female passenger lost her left leg from the knee down while using a moving walkway at Terminal 2 in the airport.

Passenger’s Leg Severed By Moving Walkway At Don Mueang Airport

A FEMALE passenger’s left leg was ripped off to the knee by a moving walkway at Don Mueang International Airport early this morning (June 29) and she was quickly taken to Bhumibol Hospital for treatment, Thai Rath newspaper said.

 

Mr. Karan Thanakuljeeraphat, director of Don Mueang Airport, said at 8.30 a.m. that the unidentified female passenger was travelling to Nakhon Si Thammarat and was proceeding through the Southern Corridor between piers 4-5 in Terminal 2 when hit by the accident.

 

Surveillance camera clips show that a bag had hit the woman on the travelator causing her to fall which then led to her left leg being ripped off to the knee.

Not The First Time – Airport Moving Walkway Devoured Passenger’s Sandal In 2019

AFTER a woman’s left leg was severed till the knee by a moving walkway at Don Mueang Airport early this morning (June 29) it has led to netizens criticising airport safety with one of them mentioning that a similar incident occurred four years ago but fortunately he pulled his foot out of the jammed croc sandal he was wearing which was then devoured by the machine, Sanook.com said.

 

The unnamed passenger said that on July 30, 2019 upon landing and Don Mueang Airport from Osaka, Japan, at around 3.50 a.m. he was going through a moving walkway and just as he was about to step off it his croc got stuck and was so badly jammed he could not lift his foot.

He decided to pull his foot out of the stuck sandal which was then immediately sucked into the machine.

 

“Well, I was really shocked. When I came back to my senses I saw that the teeth at the end of the walkway was damaged and that is why my shoe got sucked into the machine.

TRAGIC ACCIDENT RESULTS IN AMPUTATION AT DON MUEANG AIRPORT

A passenger had her left leg amputated after getting stuck in a moving walkway at Don Mueang International Airport early this morning.

She was rushed to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital for treatment after the emergency amputation of her left leg was performed by a medical team at the airport.

 

Footage from security cameras at the airport’s domestic terminal shows the passenger collapsing at 8.30am after being hit by a suitcase while on the walkway between departure gates four and five.

 

Her leg got stuck on the edge of the conveyor belt after she collapsed.

 

Graphic images published in Thai-language media, and on Facebook, show a young woman in agonizing pain struggling to free her leg from a conveyor belt.

 

The young woman was about to board a flight to travelling to Nakorn Sri Thammarat.

 

Airport officials say they are investigating the incident and will issue a report on the cause of the accident after they finish their investigation.

 

Karun Thanakuljeerapat, the airport’s director, said that the walkway had been shut while engineers investigate the cause of the accident.

 

The accident will not lead to delays in flights arriving or departing the airport, he said.

 

Airport management expressed condolences to the victim and said they would pay her medical bills as well as compensate her for the loss of her left leg, a post on the airport’s Facebook page said.

Getting her foot lacerated would have been a serious injury! She lost her leg on a moving walkway because simple basic maintenance /repair was not completed at a major international airport.

The penalty and damages awarded should be set so high that the airport goes out of its way to make sure this never happens again.

 

Fining them is no good as it's a state enterprise so I would suggest a few hundred million Baht in compensation may have the desired effect.

Are we surprised? Cost cutting on maintenance is endemic in Thailand. 

I wouldn't be surprised if the maintenance budget allocated somehow just "disappeared".

You can set a higher amount through compensatory damages than a set fine amount.

A family's financial compensation for the loss of a loved one is a lot lot less than the compensation to an individual surviving a major accident. In the case that you mention, if the student had survived but, for example, blinded the compensation would have been $100m plus. This, particular case, in America, would entail $20m + compensation.
