There is in Thailand a vestige of an epoch that is fast losing its relevance. I speak of Thailand’s conservative establishment, an obdurate machine anchored in antiquated conceptions of power, inept at moving with the currents of democratic evolution, and balefully terrified of a new political dawn.

 

The Constitutional Court and the Electoral Commission form the steely backbone of this historic relic, more adept at conspiring in hushed tones than honoring the clarion call of the ballot box. Consider, if you will, the electoral triumph of the Move Forward Party in the recent polls. The populace spoke, the establishment quaked, and the results were — how shall I put it delicaciously — overlooked. Underneath the veneer of formality, these institutions’ penchant for autocracy unfolds with startling clarity.

 

Past alliances bring this into sharp relief. History, that merciless accountant, records numerous instances where these conservative establishments have clasped hands with dictators over democrats, casting aside the promise of egalitarianism in favor of a draconian status quo. This bitter marriage with authoritarianism is not only a betrayal of the Thai people but a shambolic performance of the democratic process.

I think this time the majority of Thai people will not put up with the fact that some unelected people have the power to suppress the will of the people just because they don't like the election result. These clumsy, shamefaced, anti-democratic ploys to discredit a prospective PM won't work. As an outside observer, you can see exactly who is wrong here. Sometimes you just have to stand up and fight for your rights.

Time the Thai populous sat down and stopped working for a few days... 

watch the elite family businesses quake as profits drop, supplies go to waste and stocks are thrown out.

International businesses begin to wonder about investing in Thailand.

Put the fear of god up the dinosaurs.

This whole thing will not end well. The old order have more physical and political power than the new order and the stench of Prayuth hangs heavily over the ludicrous processes of the election. If the Senate abstains from voting it has proved it's illegitimacy and should be disbanded instantly by whatever means necessary. There is no doubt that Pita will be found guilty by the partisan court and the MFP will be disbanded. Following this the "prostitutes" in Pheu Thai and other parties will form a coalition with Prawit as PM under the guise of national security. And Thailand will be left under old order control. Without doubt democracy will not be attained unless there is a political revolution but most Thai do not have the cojones to prevail.

I would recommend that Thais do not have protests against the EC etc, but go on a National Strike.  Buses, Planes, Businesses, Trains, Post Office, Banks et al.  The strike should be for at least two weeks to have a major affect on the Hi-so's and their ill-gotten income.  If this us properly organised to get majority participation, there is nothing the military or police can do about it, but it would certainly have a huge adverse impact on those who are behind this diabolicl farce.  Poor, poor Thailand being manipulated by the very selfish few to the great detriment of the Nation.

People in debt up to their eyeballs. They can't go one or two days without work and a paycheck, much less two weeks.

indeed. As it's always been.

I rather doubt very much that this might be the Old Guard's last gasp or any suggestions thereof. 

Just a momentary glitch or bump in the road. 

 

Any reasoned logic will surely expect them to regain their dominance, in one form or another, before too long. 

Tradition.......and as long as this embedded tradition is able to force it's will on society and the situations, it will always continue as it was. 

 

Most paradoxical is that these particular circles of promoting change and whatnot don't truly pursue any real actions or finite proposals to stem the ever present tide [sort to speak]. 

 

I'm finding this whole cycling and contradictory theatre for amusement sake. 

Articles and analyst such as the above are almost always way of the mark - in scope and reality. Almost innocent in it's very nature.

If they can maintain power, they can maintain power.  There is no "relevance" or "moving with the current" when it comes to the ruling elite.

Errrrrrmmmmmm, these businesses pay their wages. People don't rule anywhere, the establishment rules and the system is always rigged but not in your favour, you aren't in the club.
