Classic Ray Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 In most democracies, a simple majority is sufficient, wait, what am I saying?
BenStark Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Is it raining or is this the first discharge from the water cannons? 1
novacova Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 “ "Pitha" failed to vote for Prime Minister in the first round, getting less than 376 votes in approval. Prepare to vote for a new round on July 19.” 1

Lucky Bones Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Well, no surprise there. Exactly as expected. Now the question is "What Happens Next?" Not much I guess. People will still grow rice and shop at 7/11. A sad (predictable) day indeed for my grand-kids. 1 1 2
Popular Post damian Posted July 13, 2023 Popular Post Posted July 13, 2023 199 abstained. Grow some nuts you complete and utter flogs. 3 2
tomacht8 Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Thailand does not have the strength to move forward. Too many brakes on board. Those who sit in Parliament should be able to make decisions. A simple yes or no is enough. But anyone who does not have a clear opinion on who should become prime minister has failed in their task in parliament. 1 1

I don't know which speech you refer to, but as soon as PMQs finished, the place emptied. At least in this Thai vote, each member had to say which way he/she/it wanted to vote. Shame too many abstained. 2 1

No, but I think you will see a ramp-up of protests and people going after the senators that did not vote. The stupid thing is that those who abstained think it was a smart move that says they did not vote.HOWEVER, abstaining is the same as a no vote in that it did not move the needle for Pita Here is a thought if a person abstains, that is, one less vote needed consider that of those that were there and voted he had enough yes votes. 3
RanongCat Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Are you quietly happy for outcome this day? What to do if things happen to change that ?
Popular Post UbonEagle Posted July 13, 2023 Popular Post Posted July 13, 2023 As many have posted the system is a joke, abstain votes should be removed from total required ie. today only 550 voted so the majority reqd should have been 275 which MF clearly has. Anyway cant change that now. How it think (hope) it'll play out is - MF will drop the 112 reforms, this will place enormous pressure on the senate to vote yes. They can always just come back to it in 4 years, if theyve done a good job and built the peoples trust (and the rigged senate gone) they'll be able to float and get thru any reforms they want. 1 2

Pita said that the second vote on PM will not be easy. When asked whether he would compromise on the lèse majesté issue, he said that, for now, the mission remains the same. He said he is not giving up on trying to talk to and gain more votes from other MPs and senators. https://twitter.com/ThaiPBSWorld/status/1679456294925914113 1

They were elected on the pledge to amend 112, and if they do go back on that they will lose a lot of their core support base. Best for them to continue to play the long game, wait it out, and keep their policies the same imo. It’s only a matter of time. 2 1

Yes, it's not a good start to a new democracy to have the new government lying about their intentions. Better to be upfront and allow time to build your case. As it will for MFP (or whatever its new incarnation calls itself after the dinosaurs have MFP banned). 1

Expect the MFP to be forcibly disbanded before long. It's all working in their favour.

MikeN Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Well I did read one article in the BP which suggested they could keep it up until the senators have been retired next May, but that would mean the general stays as caretaker PM, and who knows what he might arrange in the meantime ! There is also a provision that if they cannot agree on any of the nominated PM candidates then an "outsider" PM can be roped in, but I don't know what the criteria is for that to happen.
dinsdale Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 May be time to update the update. Non Elected Senators Planted by Military Determine Thailand's Future. This would be a very accurate headline for the update to the update. No democracy when it comes to protecting certain minority sectors of this country. The people spoke and spoke loudly in an election and it means nothing. What a counrty. What a joke.
