History of sticky rice and somtam is not interesting. Massamun history might be cause it is based on Persian spices.

I used to work in the city Chonburi, and would eat most evenings at the mall. There was one stall selling Isaan food. I ate there once, that's all it took for me - no thanks!

Smart guy

The first time I went to Bangkok I took Marina with me.

We tried Isaan Food and I asked for Extra Spicy!

Marina hasn't spoken to me since!....Or anyone else for that matter!

With a few exceptions Issan food is pretty horrible.

Unfortunately, I'm currently living here.

I'm sure they'll be the usuall posters praising the virtues of sinewy chicken, rotten fish (bala), and loads of MSG and Sugar.

Sounds like it's not Isaan food that is your problem. It's the cook.

No imagination or talent, by the sound of things.

Issan food, whoever is cooking it is definitely an acquired taste.  Most Issan people live in abject poverty so there isn't much but cheap cuts of chicken, river snails, bbq rat, etc.

Most need periodical treatment for parasites and worms due to there diet.

I do like some dishes like Som Tom and green curry.

Luckily I'm a descent cook.

Your generalisation regarding Isaan people, their diet and health are absolute rubbish.

Cheap cuts of chicken? Did you know chicken breast and thighs are cheaper than wings in Thailand?

Somtam is good. I like it with peanuts and salty eggs. Green curry is not an Isaan dish. It comes from Central Thailand.

Larb is ok. Overall Isaan food is ordinary. I much prefer curries from central and north.

Interesting you say "overall". Care to elaborate?

Liking curries from Central and North Thailand, is it the spiciness and loaded flavors you don't like in Isaan food?

I like curries. I dont like stir fries much. Dont like paw paw.

Thank-you for explaining.

There is a lot of difference between calling a whole cuisine "ordinary" and saying "I don't like it".

From what I've seen in the media, I don't think much of the look of food in Michelin Star restaurants. Little bits piled high with a sauce whipped across the dish with the back of a spoon. Not for me but I'm sure it's far from " ordinary".

Pro tip: Don't eat Isaan food in Isaan with locals doing the ordering. It won't be Laab, Gai Yaang and Som Taam. It will be things you can't eat.

Example?

Example?

I don't even know what it was (seriously). All kinds of things on a platter.  Horse Piss eggs was one thing, the only thing I could eat was some ham like meat. This was at a restaurant by the reservoir at Khon Khaen, not some village.

Seconded and I love kao Chee* Laab, Gai Yaang and Som Taam and Naam Prik Oong.

* so far I have only got people laughing when I refer to it as S-teak Lao. They appreciate the joke that broken rice with egg is like a steak to them.
