ChatGPT DOES have a left-wing bias: Scientists confirm the AI bot's responses favour the Democrats in the US and the Labour Party in the UK

Many ChatGPT users have suspected the online tool has a left-wing bias since it was released in November.

Now, a thorough scientific study confirms suspicions, revealing it has a 'significant and systemic' tendency to return left-leaning responses.

ChatGPT’s responses favour the Labour Party in the UK, as well as Democrats in the US and Brazil President Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party, it found.

Concerns regarding ChatGPT's political bias have already been raised – one professor called it a 'woke parrot' after receiving PC responses about 'white people'.

But this new research is the first largescale study using a 'consistent, evidenced-based analysis' – with serious implications for politics and the economy.

The new study was conducted by experts at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and published today in the journal Public Choice.

'With the growing use by the public of AI-powered systems to find out facts and create new content, it is important that the output of popular platforms such as ChatGPT is as impartial as possible,' said lead author Dr Fabio Motoki at UEA.

'The presence of political bias can influence user views and has potential implications for political and electoral processes.'

ChatGPT was built by San Francisco-based company OpenAI using large language models (LLMs) – deep learning algorithms that can recognise and generate text based on knowledge gained from massive datasets.

Or, it could be that these results reflect what that profound thinker, Stephen Colbert, once said in words to this effect: "it's a well-known fact that reality has a liberal bias."

The papers have some inherent shortcomings. Political beliefs are subjective, and ideas about what is liberal or conservative might change depending on the country. Both the University of East Anglia paper and the one from Park’s team that suggested ChatGPT had a liberal bias used questions from the Political Compass, a survey that has been criticized for years as reducing complex ideas to a simple four-quadrant grid.

ChatGPT is a Large Language Model (LLM) Artificial Intelligence (AI) program.  In simple terms, that means it "reads" everything made available to it and provides answers to questions asked based upon the statistical probability of what words would follow such a question based upon all the words it has read.

If answers lean liberal, that is probably because liberals are more likely to publish their ideas and will therefore be better represented in the data fed to the program.  I'm sure if ChatGPT were asked to describe a typical hero the description would be of a tall, physically fit man and if asked to describe a typical princess the description would be of a young, pretty, "good" girl.  Those are the stereotypes that occur in literature (mostly fiction) and so would be used in the answers.

ChatGPT doesn't think, it simple provides answers based upon an assessment of all data provided.  It's answers need to be evaluated with that in mind.

If conservatives want ChatGPT to lean more in a conservative direction, they need to publish more and rely less on videos, radio, podcasts, etc.

When the AI can get fitted with decent robotic skills, it can fulfill Thoreau's predictions about "those who serve the state."

"The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with
their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables,
posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the
judgment or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood
and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will
serve the purpose as well."

Stephen Colbert, the left wing comedian?

What a shocker he would say such a thing. Rack that us as fact ????.

Why bother learning what AI really is when you can just assume it is part of some vast, left-wing conspiracy.

555....agree.  Anything involving intelligence certainly wouldn't have a right wing bias.

Lol, yeah.

Try asking it these:

1. Is it okay to be proud of being black?

2. Is it okay to be proud of being white?

I honestly can't fathom why its response would be different, but it is.... ????

You can't fathom why the response would be different. For most of the past several hundred years, being black was not a thing to be proud of. So, it's a corrective to that historical legacy. Being proud to be white has a history behind it, too. In fact, the same history that made being proud to black not so much of a thing until recently.

You think somebody controls the internet?

the content, yes, been proven over & over again.

Hate when people tell me this, but 'follow the science' ... that is the topic, and what the OP implies and 'scientist' seem to agree, per OP

Only to a paranoid conspiratorial thinker would the OP imply that. Can you quote where that implication is located?

I'm going to just assume you didn't read the title of the thread or the content in the OP

In other words, you can't provide any actual quote to support what you claim. You've got nothing.

Another one:

Ask it to make a joke about men. It'll write a funny joke.

Ask it to make a joke about women. It refuses, lol. ????

I have an ignore list ... ????

... so don't bother in the future

Have a nice day

... read the title of the thread ... very slowly and multiple times, if necessary.

While at it, look up the definition of 'self explanatory'

The information we are allowed to receive is controlled, so yes.

Facebook recently admitted censoring whatever information The White House told them too, mainly about politics and COVID.

Thanks for the passive aggressive reply.

Given your past responses, you may understand "self-explanatory" in theory, but not in practice.

The rightwing always did attract the less intelligent, why is anyone shocked that Artificial Intelligence should eschew the right, particularly the extremist varieties that are currently on offer.

Because AI draws of vast swathes of literature, research and data.

It has a broad view.

Yours is perhaps a little narrower.

I think you just demonstrated the truth of Colbert’s observation.

AI is still in it's infancy. If it were a human it would be a spotty 16 year old that thinks it knows everything.

Once it matures, it will undoubtedly drop the silly left wing bias and move towards the right like most mature adults do (present company excepted).

Like many of your thoughts, misguided and clouded by a false air of superiority.
