Sutin Klungsang, deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party and tipped to be the new defence minister, said today that he believes that Thailand has long passed the days of military coups.

 

He expressed confidence that, with the help of advisors who are former military officers, he will be able to manage the affairs of one of country’s most important ministries effectively.

 

He stopped short, however, of confirming that he is slated for the job.  “Wait until there is a formal announcement,” he told reporters at Government House.

 

Sutin was, nonetheless, among nominees for a cabinet portfolio who submitted their resumes to the Cabinet Secretariat for formal verification.

 

When asked about Pheu Thai’s manifesto pledge to reform the military, Sutin said his party will try to implement every one of its election promises. “Every policy must be implemented, but how soon depends on the reality of the situation and various other factors,” he said.

 

Sutin, a former teacher and a veteran politician, was chosen by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for the defence post after an earlier nomination, Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit, a former secretary general of the National Security Council, was rejected, following opposition from members of the “red shirt” faction. Nattaphon is alleged to have been involved in the bloody crack-down of pro-Thaksin protesters in 2010.

It won't be long. After the next election I would think when MFP gains an absolute majority and can form a govt in it's own right. PT will be decimated, the military elites have already been decimated and the only way they can keep power is by a coup. Thailand is not a democratic country and never will be as long as certain powers hold the reigns.

Would it not be correct to say that the elections created Pheu Thai as what was formerly the second largest opposition party?

Nor necessarily, the courts/commissions have the ability to strike down any election results, as we've seen recently

What has past are the legal restraints against another coup.

Dropped from the 2007 Constitution in the 2017 Constitution written by the NAPO coup leadership :

Chapter III "Rights and Liberties of Thai People," Part 13 "Right to Protect the Constitution":

• "No person shall exercise the rights and liberties prescribed in the Constitution to overthrow the democratic regime of government with the King as Head of State under this Constitution or to acquire the power to rule the country by any means which is not in accordance with the modes provided in this Constitution."

So that's where the two "Uncles" fit in! They had to be part of the deal somehow. I wonder whether their "advice" will be specific to matters military, or more wide ranging?

I can guarantee 100% that ANY government that is elected without the help and votes of the 250 appointed senators will be the victim of a coup

Thinking it would be prudent to put a bet down for the next coup to be in 5-6 years. MFP gets an overwhelming majority at the next election and the elites/military than reassert dominance after a period of muddying the waters.

Of course they are gone. The 2014 Coup was staged by the Judiciary, and the ultra-conservatives.

 

And the recent slow-moving coup which began the day after the May 2023 election was staged by Parliament (Senators), EC and the Judiciary.

 

The powers that be understand that military coups look bad, so they just pivoted to using other levers of power to make transitions appear quasi-Democratic.

Yes , he will do what he wants , the excuse for broken promises and political failures is now already provided ...

 Disgusting how the old " elite " ignores the results of the election and just clings to their position ( and power ) of governing the country just as if there was no election at all .

 

May be the next election will change something ( in a few years ) , hope is the last thing to die ...

8 years is not long in a country's history.

I have been thinking this is the case for a few years now. There will never be another military coup here. Think about it. The moral authority that backed the coups in the past, is long gone. And the army does not have the guts to wage war against their people, Burmese style. 

It won't happen. The Thai army does not have the guts for it, and the Thai soldiers, and the families of the soldiers would never tolerate their sons murdering innocent Thais.

 

The moms would say "you murder one Thai, and you are never welcome in our family home again. Listen to me. Do not do this".

 

And you would have massive army defections. Who will fight at that point? Not the cowardly generals? They would flee into exile with their billions, and the army might collapse, or give up, at that point.

One of the fundamental differences, is the Thai soldiers are not facing the level of desperation the young Burmese are. The poverty here is not as grinding as it is in Burma. I do not think it could be sustained, if the fools started it. Thailand is a very different culture than Burma, on a dozen significant levels. And the youth now, are very different people than they were during past coups, which were violent. and were supported with a sort of moral authority, which is gone now. 

The army is in a difficult position now. The generals would simply have to be content with their fortunes.
