It is not as obvious in the article

but, the girl is 16 so age of consent .

but under 18 and he took her away from her family. Without their permission.

So; the charge is as stated; 

"taking a minor who is over 15 years old but not exceeding 18 years old

 

away from their parents, guardian,

or caretaker without reasonable cause,

willingly and intentionally." 

 

He ‘apparently’ took the girl to live with him, which is how he got caught in the act. They raided his house and found them in bed. And recorded it on video.

Well, he's a teacher with a full grown beard... my guess is 24 yrs old if he's a day. He sure isn't a teenager. If he was a teenager and dating underage teenage girls maybe there is leniency (depending)... but in this case he's just a dirt-bag who betrayed he's trust as a teacher. They probably should investigate his background in the US. Doubt this is his first rodeo.

I certainly don't condone adults having sex with any girl under 18. I think that's a good general rule to go by. However I've been here 11 years and am yet to see any clear information on what the actual age is.

I've heard 15, 16 and 18.

People are often also bound by the laws of there home country regardless. For example the Australian passport ships with a leaflet explaining you can't have sex with anyone under 16, regardless of the countries laws.

Although it's common sense for most people, I do think Thailand could make it much clearer.

Absolutely correct.  Folks seem to forget that the USA is not fooling around when it comes to underage sex and human  trafficking.  In addition, you are marked for life and your chance of getting a good job is over!  Finally, in Prison, I can assure you the Gangs (especially the Aryan Gangs) do not like you  when you get in.  Trust me.

A relationship between an adult and a 16 year old is never ok. Especially when it is a teacher.

I worked with a teacher in the 90s who was given 25 years for sexual relations with a 15 year old boy. I was repulsed with that case but this case seems harsh to me, maybe due to the ages of the men, 60 and whatever this guys age is. Maybe as in my country we can get married at 16.  Only 1 year difference, neither were paedophiles yet in jail they would be treated as such.

I certainly hope so. There is never, ever any justification to get with a woman under 18. Or even under 20, just to be safe. Why take that kind of risk, and why run the risk of harming the girl psychologically? Plenty of women out there who are young enough, very sexy, and willing to please. 

 

I used to know a guy who was a very prominent lawyer in Los Angeles and he would go down to Cuba a couple of times a year and specifically seek out girls that were 13, 14, and 15 years old. He spoke fluent Spanish. He would befriend them, and then meet the parents, and promise them that he would support them for years to come, in exchange for letting him get with their daughter, who was of course a virgin. Many agreed, as they were desperate financially and the minute he got with the daughter he would completely walk away. He never had any intention of providing any support, it was just a pure scam. It was such a filthy, horrific theft of integrity, character, honor and pride for those girls and their families. 

 

It was a source of pride for him and he would brag about it. The minute I heard that story I never wanted to have anything to do with this guy. That is just a colonial Conquistador mentality, that is just really ugly. There's no justification for anyone ever behaving like that. He should be in prison.

I was a teacher here for 25 years and this kind of thing, or worse, happened quite often, usually girls around M2/3, which is 13/14 years old.

Just happy my Thai Wife and I met in later life. With a 26 year age difference, that would have been a problem for many earlier years. Having seen her earlier photos, I have no doubt I would have been attracted to her. As a retired educator, having taught 6 years at the Junior high/middle school level and another 6 years at the high school level … automatic “danger Will Rodgers”. No question that their hormones were raging … males with testosterone poisoning want to challenge you … the girls practicing feminine flirting. Yikes! Some times … but YO! NO!!!

Also, it was a different era. The pursuit of crimes against underage, or trafficked women is one area where society has actually improved, and not gone backwards.

The article head line maybe wrong.  Why he was arrested may not be for statutory rape  YET.. The age of consent in Thailand is 15. HOWEVER, he is an authority as a teacher and the age of consent in that case is 18.

 

ALSO! the age of consent is 18 in the USA and I have heard the USA may have some policy in place with many countries to allow the arrest of US citizens who travel for sex with under age women.

 

Before the discussion ensues I think it would be prudent to figure out just what is going on. This article has some contradictory information.  

Not that it's particularly relevant, but the age of consent in the US is set by the states, on a state-by state basis. In some states, it's 16. Some states have laws relating to the difference in ages when one of the parties is under 18. Some don't.

It does not matter. Often, it is about the laws in the country under which you hold a passport, not local laws. It may be 13 in Argentina, but an American can still be arrested and charged there, and his life is essentially over. Finished. Done.

And those parasite parents were prob demanding money for their little "pride & joy" ???? and he made the mistake of not paying or falling behind. Nothing like the wrath of Thai parents scorned and not getting their cut.
