Former senator proposes ways to cut energy prices

Former Senator Rosana Tositrakul, a staunch advocate for reform of the energy pricing structure, has proposed a set of measures to cut electricity and fuel prices on a sustainable basis, instead of the short-term remedies expected to be rolled out by the government.

 

She identified the key areas which need to be addressed to bring the prices down, among them are excess electricity generated or to be generated by the independent power producers (IPPs), the availability payment charged by the IPPs under the “take-or-pay” clause in the contracts between IPPS and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the cost of fuel sold to EGAT by a subsidiary of PTT Public Company for power generation and the excise tax charged on fuel oil.

 

Rosana explained that PTT has been supplying EGAT with natural gas from the Gulf of Thailand and Myanmar, as well as imported LNG, for electricity generation.

Just imagine the possibilities for the type of society Thailand could become if there wasn’t so much damn corruption.

It is a tragedy that a country with so much natural wealth that is so ideally located has so much unnecessary poverty and deprivation.

I've got an idea that's a real winner for Thailand's energy prices. How does free electricity sound? Sounds pretty good to me. All Thailand needs to do is to use its immense soft power to bring down the world prices of oil and gas. There fixed it for you !

 

I know I'm totally stupid, but my idea is as workable as her's.

From a report written in November 2021, I doubt if much has changed since then.

Could well be that if everyone turned to solar the price would come down but would it come down enough to close that 80% gap?

The senator is right about the IPPS contracts with their "take or pay" deals where the consumer ends up paying for excess electricity.

 

Not sure how much of this article I can quote under fair usage rules but I think its well worth a read.

 

“There isn’t a way to call anyone accountable for this failure in planning,” Chuenchom said. “We can’t really hold anybody responsible for all the excess investment or the excess burden that could eventually get passed on to consumers.”

 

The article also talks about how its nigh on impossible to calculate the true cost to the consumer of these deals due to the way they are structured.

How much would it cost to connect the Laos electricity to get it to the southern provinces?

Laos is Laos, Thailand is Thailand.  Aside for the massive distances mentioned by billd766 it would also be imported 'goods', meaning no Thai jobs and subject to duties - let alone the infrastructure required to make it viable.

We keep hearing how some from the old junta Gov want to offer suggestions and become advisors to this PTP Gov ... why???  The Defense Minister even said he could call on Prayut and Prawit if he has any questions.  This is ridiculous.

Thailand has already signed contracts to buy more electricity than the country needs from dams in Laos that haven't even been constructed.

How about promoting energy conservation as opposed to more generation? Major savings could be had if there were regulations regarding how cold air conditioning can be. Malls, offices, theaters: the temp is so low one needs a jacket or blanket. I can only take 15-20 minutes in some malls...

Maybe 15 yrs ago I read a study regarding energy savings, and the numbers were huge. Sorry I don't have it anymore to share....
