Samui International Airport in the southern province of Surat Thani turned into a scene from a Western movie after a minibus driver shot a Grab driver following a heated dispute.

Bophut Police Station officers rushed to a parking area of the arrival passenger terminal in the airport to investigate the shooting scene. Officers discovered travellers were shocked by the incident while the victim, a 30 year old man named Boy, was transferred to Bangkok Samui Hospital before police arrived at the scene.

During their initial examination of the scene, officers uncovered three bullet shells and traces of blood near the parking fee collection counter.

Pretty damning evidence.

I read the other thread (now closed) with the headline... [A bit of a fracas at the airport today.]

In the opening post  [by Tropicalevo] there was no mention of location, but as soon as I read his description of events I immediately guessed Phuket or Samui...

Other comments [Nick Carter icp - Things like this happen the World over , just incase you are about to go into *All Thai men are blah blah blah * mode]

No... not really, things like this do not happen the World over...  they happen in area's of lawlessness where the sense of entitlement of the taxi and van mafia is further enabled by the police who fail in their duty of care to the protect the public to apply any enforcement whatsoever.

Welcome to Thailand tourists....  how many families will never return after witnessing this ?

How many potential tourists does such news deter ?

Wait! It's an airport, the shot victim had already been taken to the hospital! So...where were the police? not out and about making sure passengers moving around the airport were OK? or more likely sitting on their backsides in a comfy backroom.

Why did he feel he needed to carry a gun in his minivan? if a customer gets involved in an argument will he pull his gun out and shoot him or her he intended to kill him lock him up for attempted murder or next time he will shoot someone dead.

Doesn't surprise me, Samui makes Phuket look good for taxis, even years ago airport taxi mafia wanted 500baht from the airport to bophut, which is basically a 10 minute journey and less than 5km.  Most expensive flight domestic route in the world, combined with most expensive taxis, now with an all out blood battle as you arrive, nah I'll pass

Come on people , you know somebody has to die before anything is taken seriously here .

Then it is a clamp down for Two weeks , then business as usual .

There is... but when visiting there just over a year ago it was impossible to get a Grab.

I tried to get a GrabBike - 0% ...  No choice but to flag down a Win-rider.

I tried to get a GrabTaxi - 0% ...  Nothing available at all.

I tried to get a GrabVan - 100% available at heavily inflated rates.

Thus: In my experience - Grab only works for Vans and the rates are as high as the Mafia pricing.

i doubt it mate.

The photo is from outside the departure terminal, not where passenger are arriving and waiting for transport to their destination on the island. Taxis are not allowed inside the arrival area in Samui Airport; re. the latter part of the article in The Thaiger.

To my knowledge the area outside the departure terminal is not allocated to minibusses – at least I've not noticed any signs – everyone seems to be allowed to let passenger off there. I always stop there so my family or friends can get out with their luggage and have a short distance to the check in counters. If I need to get into the departure terminal, I can turn in the roundabout and park in the short-time parking booths.
