I visit my Mom and step dad every year for about 2 months and it's important for my own planning to know they won't be around at some point in the next 10 years, which is why I bring it up.  I would have spent more time with my Dad if i knew he would be dead at 68 but I was assured that's "too young to die". Yeah right.

My parents always looked at death with amusement. My mother told me that when my father at 83 woke up in the morning he would laugh and say, "Amazing, we're still here," he died after his third heart attack, my mother died when a car hit her on her mobility scooter while crossing the road, she never thought to look at the traffic, at 93 she had memory problems, she would tell my brother about the amazing book she had just read and he would reply "I know, you've read it 4 times and tell me about it each time." She just laughed and said "I'm a problem to myself but as long as I can forget about it it it's ok".

I am 80. I could get hit by a tuk-tuk tomorrow crossing the street, or live for 5-10 years more. There's nothing I can do about it, except keep doing what I am doing.

If my quality of life deteriorates, it will be time to pull the plug.

I would hope I never get to be so insensitive and ill-mannered that I would be reminding others of their mortality.

You sound like a pretty messed up person going around telling people that they have less 10 years to live or whatever it’s just outrageously stupid maybe you get your kicks out of that I retired at age 46 because I really didn’t think I had that much longer to live and wanted to enjoy my life and now in my 70s and life is good I do what I want when I want. I enjoy many things I would never ever tell people how many years they had left. What is stupid person that would be doing that is amazing has nothing to do with being a realistic person I mean really what the hell is it your business or what are you get out of telling people that they have 10 years left to live that’s idiotic do you get off on that crap or what it sounds like you have a very bad life and you need some mental help from a professional psychiatris maybe you should keep your <deleted> up comments to yourself TIT

Yes he used to get terrible angry and this was in the 1990's

    Not long ago, I posted on some thread that 70 is the absolute worst of the dreaded birthdays ending in zero.  I think anybody who has reached 70 is well-aware of the limited time they have left--and we don't need reminding, thank you very much.  Unless you have a terminal illness, nobody knows how many years they have left--and that includes the OP with his 'you-have-less-than-10-years'.  Maybe, maybe not.

    My Mom lived to 101 and my Dad to 95.  Mom had Alzheimer's but Dad was sharp as a tack and active right till the end.  What that bodes for me is anyone's guess.  However many years I have left, I want to make the most of them.  I hated being robbed of two years of international travel by covid--and hope to make some of it up by trying to see more of the places I want to visit while I am still healthy and relatively spry.  

    Facebook reminds me periodically that time is flying--and seemingly flying at a faster speed the older I get.  The other day, it reminded me that it was 4 years ago that my partner and I started our renovation of the last condo we owned before moving on to houses.  I would have guessed 2 or 3 years--I have a terrible sense of time and always guess low.                   

    Yesterday, we sold the second renovated house we have done and we moved into a new house that is just being finished--a project that has taken since February, when the foundation was laid.  Being involved, for the first time, with a new house construction from start to finish has been interesting, fun, and--often--hard work and challenging.  But, ultimately rewarding to see it all finally come together.  However, I think we are both ready to hit the 'pause button' on these projects and hit 'fast forward' on more traveling and doing other things.

     One thing I am certain of is Thailand has provided me and my partner an interesting, rewarding, and enjoyable time since we arrived in 2010--which does not seem very long ago.  It was a good decision for both of us to move here.
